My mother is coming to Chicago for her first visit since my father died a few weeks ago and would like to go someplace special for Mother's Day. I want to be sure to choose a nice place but have never done Mother's Day in this town before so I'm turning to the only group I can trust to recommend a place.
    Thanks!

Not exactly those neighborhoods, but not far is GNR winner Sweets and Savories on Fullerton just east of Ashland. We had a very nice Sunday brunch there with my girlfriend's mother when she came to visit. Check out page one of this thread.

Cafe Matou is doing a special menu for Mother's day (as well as their usual menu). I always enjoy their food, and my mother liked the restaurant (we have not been on Mother's day, though)

    Mother's Day
Sunday, May 11th - Open at 1:00 PM

Chef Charlie Socher will offer a four-course menu prix-fixe
    in honor of Mother's Day.
    - $43.00 -

Cream of tomato soup with fresh basil
Smoked moulard duck breast salad - or - Mussels with Chablis cream
Grilled salmon - or - Roast prime rib
Pineapple sorbet with berries - or - Chocolate cake roll with coconut and almonds

Our regular menu will also be available.
    Reservations recommended; please call 773.384.8911.

I would recommend Hot Chocolate. Very good place for parental visits.

i definitely second hot chocolate for mother's day brunch. i took my (then pregnant) sister there last year for her first almost mother's day, and they gave all the moms (including my sister) heart-shaped cookies with 'mom' written on them. it was very sweet. plus, it's an awesome brunch in general.
