One of the lamentable things about living in Hyde Park for the past four years has been the dearth of good sushi options. I am hoping that someone might be able to recommend a sushi joint in the near south side or in the south loop? I really do not want to drive all the way up to LP or WP for good sushi....

    Dkimerling,

I've only been once, but quite enjoyed Kohan on Maxwell St at Halsted. Fish was fresh, we had nigiri, sashimi and a fashion roll. Staff was friendly, I suggest you sit at the sushi bar is that is your main focus, I would not hesitate to return.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

Hands down for me it would be South Coast. It is the same as Coast up north.

I'm not a sushi fan myself, so someone else will have to chime in on its quality (or lack thereof), but Oysy does seem to draw a crowd and its decor is very pleasant. At 880 S. Michigan, it's about 2 blocks off the #6, #28X, #2X stop at Balbo and Michigan. Website here:

Mario and jbw beat me to it, I would recommend both OYSY and South Coast. I think South Coast is actually applying for a liquor license (they have a beautiful bar that should not be wasted storing wine glasses and nothing else). OYSY has a nice patio for summer on Michigan...if you don't mind the taxis whizzing by.

Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

To OP, do yourself a favor, drive to Katsu or Chiyo...and no, I do not agree LP/WP has "better" sushi. No pun intended.

Oysy is pretty good as a vaguely near-by option. I must though admit that De Rice, which delivers in Hyde Park, makes an excellent spicy tuna roll. There selection though is limited but surprisingly tasty!
