I'm looking for those eggs that I read about about and see on TV specials with chefs, with that beautiful reddish orb of a yolk. I've been fixated on it lately. Does anyone know where I might find such an egg in Chicago?

The only place I know of is at Prairie Crossing in Grayslake. Last summer I stopped by to ask about the eggs and if I remember correctly the price was $4 a dozen. On days other than the farmers' market day, it works on the honor system since the barn is usually unstaffed - you take a carton of eggs from the cooler and leave your $4 in a box nearby. In the summer they also sell honey, beef, and all the usual farmers' market fruits and vegetables.

Green Acres frequently has organic eggs, although I've ever purchased them, so I can't attest to the color of the yolks.

I know there are other occasional purveyors of farm-fresh eggs at the Evanston Farmers' Market, but I'm blanking on then now.

There's usually a few vendors selling fresh eggs at the Green City Market in Lincoln Park. We picked up one last Saturday.

Henry's Farm, I think. They also have duck eggs sometimes. You have to get there early, they sell out fast :)

At the Saturday Evanston farmers market, in addition to Henry's Farm, Nichols Farm and sometimes Green Acres have farm fresh eggs. Though, as Leek said, get there early they sell out fast. I've been there at 8am and both Nichols and Henry's were out of eggs.

One word of warning, don't get carried away. :)

    Enjoy,

I've mentioned this before, but as good a spot as any to get the eggs when you need to be doing the gettin' is Cassie's Green Grocer at 1402 W. Grand. Stop by to congragulate Cassie and Greg on their recent nuptials.

Thanks for the responses. Has anyone found eggs with the yolks I seek? I'm pretty sure that even the freshest of farm eggs might not have this yolk, as it's dependent upon the hens' diet.

oh boy, Henry's Farm eggs are soooooo good. I haven't had them yet this year, but I do seem to recall the yolks having a nice vivid color. I have also been enjoying brown and araucana eggs from Country Cottage Farms. They are available at the green city market and True Nature Foods in edgewater.

My recollection from last summer is that eggs by Country Cottage Farm had bright orange/red yolks. I haven't seen them at Green City Market this year, but you can get their eggs at True Nature Foods.

I bought them today from Mint Creek Farm, whose star attraction is their grass/legume-fed lamb. Chicken eggs were a very reasonable 3 bucks a dozen. The eggs had a beautiful, bright orange yolk and brittle shells that come with supreme freshness. I should have bought more, as the whole dozen just went into a large batch of ice cream base, which also used 4 bunches of Kinnikinnick Farm mint from the market.

Mint Creek also had duck eggs for 5 bucks.

The Wettsteins will have their organic chicken and duck eggs at the Oak Park Farmers' Market this week and next. As a good egg from an outdoor chicken should be, theirs vary in color by season. They're always beautiful--and delicious--but now that spring is really here they should also be getting darker orange.

VI has previously noted that the Henry's Farm eggs discussed above are Wettstein eggs.

It is not unusual for the Wettsteins, and the other fresh egg sellers at the farmers' market, to run out of their eggs fairly early. If you're not going to be up and out early, it would probably be wise to pre-order. 309-376-7291 or wettsteinorganicfarm@agapemail.com
