heirloom tomatoes

stanley's produce (corner of elston and north ave.) has added heirloom tomatoes to its growing collection of interesting produce. and they are a very reasonable $1.98/lb. mostly reds, a few yellow and some green zebras. unfortunately, they are not local (sorry VI), they have canadian labels. justjoan

Canadians are harvesting heirloom tomatoes already? Are they greenhouse-grown?

Wow, they'd have to be greenhouse grown, I'd think. I have friends in North Dakota and they are still getting frosts/freezes this spring (as recently as last weekend, in fact), everything is very backed up, growing-wise.

Justjoan, did you pick any up? How were they? For $1.98 a pound it might be worth a trip to get some, heirloom tomatoes would be a nice treat.

i'm afraid i dont know anything about the growing conditions. i brought 2 red, round ones (there are many elongated reds). they dont have specific name on them, the label just says 'sunset heirloom tomatoes, canada". havent tasted them yet. sorry, jj

If you buy them, make sure to consume them ASAP. I bought 2 of the purple-red ones that went bad within a few days of purchase. That said, I'll probably get one or two more next time I'm there, but will eat them quicker!

The Evanston Whole Foods is also selling Canadian heirloom tomatoes--for around 6 bucks a pound. They are almost assuredly greenhouse-grown and have little flavor and a horrific texture.

I bought some of these Canadians a few weeks back at Family Fruit Market. Mushy inside and not too tasty. They are still there and I keep getting tempted. $1.98 a lb.

I know in a few short weeks there will be plenty at the Farmer's Market but I'm a jonesin' for some good bruschetta.

I should have figured that $1.98/lb good heirloom tomatoes were far too good to be true. Ah, wishful thinking.
