    Hi All,

My wife and I want to try making our own marmalade. The best article we've found about it is here: http://ppewww.physics.gla.ac.uk/~flavell/marmalade.html

They recommend Seville oranges, which are only available in late December. We've never seen them in the Chicago area, does anyone know of a good source?

If not, we're going to try making it with some other sort of citrus. We're shooting for something organic, so there's no chance that we're boiling pesticide covered peels.

Any advice or pointers would be great...

    Thanks,
    Chris

Seville oranges are pretty much the same as Mexican sour oranges, so you might want to try a Hispanic grocer, such as Carniceria Jimenez.

That's great! Thanks! Have you seen them available in Chicago? I found a place to order online, but wasn't sure if I could save on shipping.

    Thanks again!

    Chris

Edited to say: Williams and Sonoma...sorry, I missed that part in your initial article.

You can find them in Chicago, but not (in my experience) at the Mexican groceries here. In Mexico they are used primarily in the Yucatan, and unfortunately not many Yucatecos have chosen to emigrate to Chicago.

You'll have better luck at La Unica on Devon, or at a Puerto Rican grocery such as La Municipal on Division. The Spanish name for this orange is naranja agria.

    Good luck,

I've seen them at Cost Plus on occasion.

    HI,

I have bought them at Williams and Sonoma. They have thin and thick sliced versions, which may or may not be important to you. I buy both, then make a double batch by mixing them together.

    Good luck!

    Cathy2

Hey guys. Just resurrecting this thread and wondering if Seville oranges have been more readily available since the last post.

    Hi,

This is a seasonal fruit one finds in January-February. I will be surprised if a fresh Seville orange can be found now.

I don't know specifically about seville oranges (meaning from seville,) but bitter oranges (as they're sometimes called) are often available in that name at caribbean markets: I've seen them sometimes at Marketplace on Oakton, and often at the Rogers Park Fruit Market, but haven't been on the lookout recently. (Sometimes it's called "sour orange," a more literal translation of "naranja agria.")

FWIW I did just see the bottled Goya bitter orange juice at a couple days ago at Marketplace, next to the Mojo Criollo that is a staple in our pantry (thanks yet again JeffB, I love this stuff.) While I'm guessing it isn't the same as fresh, I've used it with success. For reference, my homemade mojo recipe suggests subbing equal parts lime and orange juice for bitter orange if it's unavailable.
