Fuji - Portage Indiana

This might be stretching the "Chicagoland" definition, but I wanted to tell you about my favourite sushi spot in Northwest Indiana.



Fuji, in Portage Indiana (It's a long drive, even for me) is one of the best hole-in-the wall sushi restaurants I've ever had the pleasure to visit. It's generally never busy, with maybe one or two tables out of 12 being occupied. The fish is as fresh as any I've had in Chicago, and it's a steal at their prices. Their rolls aren't the most creative I've had, and their selection isn't the most exotic - but I don't need a lot of glitter to make me happy.

You'll be greeted by by owner, Amy Wang, when you walk in - her husband, William, is usually back in the kitchen where he makes everything, including the sauces, from scratch. Amy is very friendly and more than a little chatty if you show appreciation for the food. She likes to make recommendations and always tells us when there's something new on the menu. Her English isn't the greatest, but she always manages to get the point across.

Last night we started with the Chirashi: Red Snapper (Tai?), Tako, Tamago, (a little too much Ginger, honestly) Salmon, Tuna (It had nice striations, I forgot to ask if it was Toro), Cucumber, Crabstick, and Scallops - and some Daikon in back.


Here's a detail of the same to show the texture of the fish. Sadly, I didn't get the scallops in focus in this one.



The Monkey Roll - If I remember, Unagi and Seaweed Salad with spicy tuna on top.



And finished with the Volcano Roll - Avocado, Spicy tuna (and something that is out of the shot, and so I don't remember), The whole thing is tempura fried and then topped with Masago and a couple types of hot sauce. We usually don't get so much spicy Tuna, but I was in the mood for something hot.



I forgot to take a picture of the lovely complementary pineapple dessert, but perhaps next time. They also have a much wider menu than what I've displayed here: Tempuras, Teriyakis, Bento Boxes, and much more - but if I'm driving out there, it's for the fish.
