I don't post often, but drop in from time to time to see what you all are up to. I moved in the spring to Galewood from the far, far west burbs and appreciate the posts of all you Oak Park people. I have worked in Forest Park for several years, however, right across from a place I have grown to appreciate so much more since moving here: Ed's Way. Ed's Way (never just Ed's) is a corner grocery located at Harvard and Beloit in Forest Park.
Ed's Way is small, and certainly doesn't have everything on my shopping list, but they do a good job with the basics. One of the best things about this place is the deli, where they will make you any sandwich you want from whatever is in the case for $2.89. This is no schleppy 2 slice of turkey sandwich either. I'm pretty sure the deli workers all raised teenage sons, because they are not lighthanded with the filling.
The other great thing about Ed's Way is the meat department. It is always well stocked and the quality is high. I have been told that it is all choice, but have not verified this. They butcher and grind their own meats, and there is almost always a butcher around. Today I asked for two filets, nice and thick. My request was relayed exactly as I asked, and I watched while they were cut and trimmed. I came home with two filets at least 2" thick at 1.67 lbs combined with virtually no waste. They were outstanding.
The produce dept. could be improved, but again, basics are generally fine.
The chain groceries can't even come close, and for me, it is incredibly convenient. I often think I should explore other small groceries in our new area, but Ed's Way is across the street.
