    The Joy of Recipe Research:
    Discovering a Recipe’s Past.

    With Food Historian Sandy Oliver

    September 23 -- 25, 2008
    Historic Sauder Village
    Archbold, OH

All recipes have a genealogy, just as people do. Before we can tell a recipe’s story, or recreate it in a modern or period kitchen, we have to know its family history.
This participatory workshop is dedicated to researching recipes using cookbooks, newspapers, narratives, letters. Working with print and digital cookbooks, each participants will conduct independent research with personal guidance from workshop leader Sandy Oliver on the recipe of their choice. The last afternoon, we will prepare the recipes explored during the week in Sauder’s historic kitchens using the open hearth or wood burning stove. Then we will eat the results for supper.

Each day begins with instruction followed by independent work. Most days, we will begin at 8:30 a.m., break for coffee mid-morning, stop for lunch, and work until 5:00 p.m. Thursday runs until supper is over, around 8:30 p.m.

Sauder Village, Archbold, Ohio, is one hour from Toledo, a little over an hour from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and about three hours from Detroit, Michigan.

The Village offers both a hotel and a campground. The hotel has a swimming pool, exercise rooms, free continental breakfast, and free wireless internet access. The rooms have a combination of queen/queen, king rooms, and suites. A block of rooms have been reserved for this workshop and the room rate is only $74 per night plus tax. Registrants should request the Historic Foodways Workshop Block.

The campground offers utility hook-ups, a bathhouse with showers, restrooms and laundry facilities, fully graded RV spots, stone walkways, picnic tables, plus the same continental breakfast, pool-use, and wireless connections as the hotel. A site with electric only is $29.00, electric and water is $33.00, and full hook-up is $36.00

    About the instructor:
Sandy Oliver began doing food history in 1971 at Mystic Seaport Museum, where she developed a fireplace cooking program. She has published Food History News for nineteen years, and is the author of four books on American foodways.
