This might be a little vague, but does anyone have a recommendation of where I should take my girlfriend for her birthday. She lives in northbrook, so somewhere near there would be great! Looking for something romantic and perhaps trendy. Thanks a lot.

    What kind of food?

Anyone know if the sushi joint on top of the hotel where Osteria Tramonto is is still around?
Might be an option if you need trendy
Osteria Di tramonto is another option in the area
But, if you are looking for specific type of food, there may be better suggestions.

Is this dinner a surprise? If not, perhaps you could ask her where she would like to go for her birthday.

What about Di Pescara or Prairie Grass in Northbrook.

Campagnola, Quince, Jacky's or Chef Station in Evanston would also be nice options.

Or Le Titi de Paris in Arlington Heights

Also, I haven't been, but Papillon in Skokie was on Check Please and it looked romantic.

With the exception of Di Pescara, I've been to all the others mentioned, and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. In Evanston, I'd add Stained Glass, Jilly's, and Oceanique to the list. Closer to Northbrook, you might want to check out this recent thread about Haussmann Brasserie in Northfield, or the thread about Michael in Winnetka.

The suburbs don't really do trendy, but here are the places I think have good food and qualify as romantic:
Stained glass (Evanston): nice room, good food, and an excellent wine program. If flights of wine would be a plus, this could be the place.
Oceanique (Evanston): top notch seafood, nice room.
Michaels (Winnetka): old style french cooking with lots of great sauces, and I suspect lots of butter and cream in them; my one meal there was lick your plate good.
Jacky's Bistro (Evanston): The name says it all; French bistro style cooking.
Carlos (Highwood): Very high end. Been around for years. I've not been, so I can't say much about it.
Chef's Station (Evanston): This would be the place if you want a multi-course tasting menu.

I'm guessing you haven't tried Union Pizza.

You guess correctly! I guess I should give it a try, but every time I get in the car to go for pizza, the car automatically goes to Spacca Napoli.
