    A pal asked me to ask you where in Chicago he might find "mustard fruit" which apparently is figs (or some other fruit) soaked in mustard oil. Pls consider yourselves duly asked! :D

    I think your friend may be referring to Mostarda di Frutta which is an Italian fruit preserve spiced with mustard essential oil. The mostarda generally has a mix of whole or chopped candied fruits such as cherries, figs, plums, pears, peaches and tangerines which are added to the mustardy, sweet syrup.

    I've generally seen it at fancier Italian food stores around Christmas time.

    whole foods carries several flavors. it is in the cheese department. there 's not really any mustard taste. it's great on cured meat sandwiches. here is some info. justjoan

    Bumped to see if there are any more ideas for Mostarda di Frutta. I will check at Whole Foods to see if they still have it. An Italian friend purchased some at Treasure Island recently (doesn't remember the brand) but was disappointed that it had no bite to it.

    F & O used to stock it around this time of year, but it's been a few years since I've checked.
