Portofino's Pizzeria at Main and Dodge in Evanston is one of my go-to places for pizza slices -- pretty good deal for decent thin crust. Took a chance on take-out of their "Police" whole pizza this weekend, which was a nice surprise. It's a virtual gyro-in-one-hand; gyros meat sliced from the cone with requisite tomatoes, onion, lettuce, pepperoncini and garlic sauce. If you're in the mood for something non-traditional -- and I'm usually a mushroom-and-onion traditionalist when it comes to pizza -- IMHO it's worth a try.

I have two "go tos" for gyros pizza. Note: these are only places near where I work. We order these once in a while when everyone falls off of the "bring a salad for lunch" bandwagon, and only the most severe of grease fixes wil do. Fortunately, when you fill up on gyros pizza, it staves off the next grease cravings for a long, long, time.

Pete's Pizza on Milwaukee and Deerfield Rd. in Riverwoods.

    JK's in Prospect Heights .

After a few tries, we have it down to:
    Thin crust
    reg pizza sauce
    gyros
onion (usually half with, half without)
    tomato
    mozz cheese
    tzatziki on the side.
    It's really, really good.

My first roommate in college was quite into gyros as a topping on cheap delivery 'zza. When I'd first heard him mention it, I thought
    "Ewww..!
    Wait..hmm..well...
    Ok, ya, maybe."

And I'm now a believer. The only problem: Convincing others to consider splitting a gyros pizza.

Gyros pizza? Sounds like the illegitimate offspring of Mr Gyros and Mrs Pizza.

Um, I used to tend bar in the triangle back in the day. I've eaten there MANY, MANY times. I believe, back in the day, they had a longstanding bogo offer on a gyros. After bar closing, I think I would get a few of the burgers, and a pizza puff on the way home. Cheap, bad, hot, greasy. It had its place.

    Timely topic!

We made a gyros pizza (using a Boboli crust) a few days ago. We had a bunch of feta cheese and some leftover gyros meat in the house. We added red onions, olives, mushrooms, and jalapenos. The gyros were above the cheese so the meat got hot and crispy.

Having never enjoyed a gyros pizza before, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Yum!

Papa T's has gyro meat for topping and I tried it years ago. Better than you might think. It's just the meat though, no sauce or anything. Try it if you find others offering it.

Yes, many times, I live 300 feet away. Total hole, but the sauce is a bit unique, very garlicy which I like and they do a good job of thin slicing the onions. They are known for buy one get one free gyro, but in my experience you get less meat than if you just order one gyro with fry so a bit misleading.
