Whoops...that's my bad. I found the price @ the store and didn't bother to read it more closely.

FYI These Tres Santos micro-lots weren't listed on their weekly Clover Bar menu (the single-cup fresh brew), but I asked and they were happy to make me one. The guy who brewed it said that anytime they have an open bag, the can brew that roast on the spot.

I also very much enjoy Intelligentsia, very much so....

The reduction in bag size also explains why some of the Lettuce restaurants charge a bit more for a cup of coffee now....

Not sure I follow your logic here.

The fact that the price of coffee in restaurants has gone up probably reflects the fact that the world price of green coffee beans has gone up by some 35 percent in the last 2 and half years.

I wanted to add my two cents on my favorite coffee in Chicago. Having lived around the corner from Beograd Market and Cafe on Irving Park Rd., I never stopped in for coffee until I moved away. My loss. I dropped in the other day and have been trying to figure out an excuse to get up there again so I can order some coffee. I had a latte. They only have one size, which is served in a fairly small to go cup, but it was excellent. It reminded me what an espresso-based drink should taste like. I'm drinking a Lavazza latte right now. I think they make some of the better coffee downtown. It is a pale imitation.

Intelligentsia is going to stop selling their large 20oz coffee:

Intelligentsia bean prices have gone up considerably in the past year relative to prices at Metropolis. I don't know what's happened to the price of their brewed coffee. I wonder if removing the 20oz cup is also part of a move to raise the prices on the small and medium cups.

I stopped in the store this morning and saw a notice saying the same. They're also serving cappucino's in their "traditional" size (I forget the exact word they used) -- my guess is they mean 8oz.? Also, all espresso drinks will have two shots of espresso as standard. I'm hardly opposed to either -- my Starbucks order has consistently been a double-short latte. These changes are set to go into effect on Aug. 1.

I'm a little surprised that they're ditching the 20oz., at least in light of rising prices. As I understand it, the price increase from a medium to a large is usually higher than the cost of the additional ingredients. That's the way it is with soda, though I grant that coffee might have lesser margins. I hope that the 12 and 16oz. cups don't go up -- they're already priced a little on the high side, IMO.

Though, anyone going to the downtown location can opt instead to hit Wow Bao at Randolph and State -- they brew an in-house blend from Intelligentsia all day (a dark blend of central american beans, with a light blend during breakfast hours) for about $1.90/16oz.

:D Hi everyone, it's Dimples from America's Market. I just wanted to let you know I am a "Peet Nik". We carry it at the store plus we also have Intelligensia (spelled incorrectly?) We also have a brand of coffee from New Mexico, called New Mexican Pinon. I have not tried it yet, but we had some customers asking for it and it smells delicious. Have a good night. I hope you stop in soon! Dimples :D

If the concerns are truly for serving coffee hot and fresh, why don't they simply present an option for coffee at the 20-oz. price served in a 10-oz. cup with free refills?

Today, I had the opportunity to stop in at Fratelli Coffee Roasters, a 61 year old Chicago based company that recently relocated its operation to a strip center that the principals of the company own on River Road near where the new Intercontinetal Hotel is going up in Rosemont.

The company sells its coffee on the internet for $7.99 to 8.99 per pound. However, if you stop in their roasting facility in person, they will sell it to you for $5 per pound. The owner, Sean, indicated to me that some of the local grocery markets, like Caputo's carry their product.

And give you a nice tour of the facility if you ask. I was really impressed with the flavor and balance of their "Gourmet Blend" that I bought today. It was smooth and rich in taste.

Fratelli is an LTH kind of place: Its local. The owners are on site. And, they have a real passion for what they do.
