LTH's intrepid Peter Engler is quoted in this Chicago Sun-Times article on the Megabus.
Chicago food historian Peter Engler has made about 25 round trips on Megabus. Engler, who doesn't have a car, takes Megabus to sample regional cuisine in Detroit, Milwaukee and Toledo, where he had a "Double Goopie" hamburger at the Green Lantern diner....

    Hi,

Mike Gebert's 'Sky Full of Bacon' video series gets mentioned in The Reader's Blog.

Interesting anecdote in the last paragraph worth catching.

Great job, Melissa! You were authoritative, knowledgeable, calm, coherent and obviously, well-prepared. It was very nice that the pace of the segment was not as frenetic as they can often be.

I found Linda Yu a bit annoying with her constant interruptions of both you and her co-host but I chalk that up to the fact that you even had her very enthused about what you were doing.

    Congrats!

I don't normally post about my or anybody else's blog postings, if you want that you can find it yourself, but I think this whole thing, which has spiraled to involve four different websites, a famous NY food writer, and two Mikes, has snowballed to a point of being of note. Menu Pages sums it up and links to the various steps along the way.

The joke is better than the reality.

Someone called for a mushroom identification. She was given two phone numbers: the Field Museum and mine. The woman recognized the phone number as one from Highland Park. She called to learn not only was she one block from my house. She goes to yoga class with my Father. She offered to pick me up, instead I drove over. Walked into her yard where it began to drop off into a ravine. She had a puffball mushroom the size of two soccer balls plus two more the size of softballs. Her brother is a physician who forbid her from eating any of them. I told her if the large one was pure white when sliced open would be suitable to eat. Of course, I did comment there is always the chance she may be allergic. I advised the two smaller puffballs would continue to grow and harvest them at her convenience.

Tell me! I once had a centerfold article in the journal Crododile, a humor magazine in the USSR, where nothing from the formal interview was noted. However my post-interview lunch conversation was pretty much out there verbatim. Fortunately it was all for the good, though it was a bit of surprise to say the least.

    Hi,

Mike G's impressions of his recent travels to Springfield were picked up by a Kathryn Rem of the Springfield Journal-Register. Her article 'Horseshoe didn't fit this critic,' about Springfield's famous local invention: the Horseshoe sandwich.

If you scroll down, you get the reaction of Springfield residents to Mike's comments. Some agreed and many didn't.

The most interesting thing about that article is actually one of the comments which gives a clue into the pedigree of the slinger (Don't ask, just eat).

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the venerable OT Hodge Chile parlors since 1904 in St. Louis, but I don't think our horseshoe is any worse than their famous 'Slinger' which consists of: two cheeseburger patties, hash browns, two eggs on toast covered with chile and optionally some chopped onion.

This is only tangentially an LTH Forum thing -- but the tangent does exist. I worked with Maria Baez Kijac on The South American Table (editing, writing stuff like history and geography, helping with testing) -- so I'm the book's link to LTH, though the book is still entirely Maria's. The book came out in 2003, with a foreword by Charlie Trotter and lots of great reviews, and was named the best Latino cookbook in the world that year.

This year -- in October 2008 -- the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Europe named it "Best of the Best" -- the best Latino cookbook in the world for the entire 12 years Gourmand has been giving the awards.

Thought that was newsworthy. Those of you who know Maria may want to congratulate her.
