Yesterday (7.11.08), my wife and I along with five other foodies took a wonderful North side Ethnic Grocery Store Tour with Evelyn J. Thompson (evelyn@ethnic-grocery-tours.com). Evelyn provided an energetic tour loaded with fun facts about Chicago's historical ethnic neighborhoods and their food backgrounds. We went from Jamaican to Bosnian to Sicilian to Cuban to German to Turkish to Swedish to Indian -- and so on -- grocery stores all afternoon long. Even saw one of the first restaurants to serve sushi in the US right after WW II. With a great deal of local pride, Evelyn pointed out that Chicago had sushi before San Francisco. All the noshing and shopping for delicacies along the way was pretty great too. Go to Evelyn's web site and do this while the weather permits a glorious afternoon outdoors in our city. http://www.ethnic-grocery-tours.com

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for chiming in on Evelyn Thompson's foodie tours. Evelyn led Culinary Historian members on trips through Argyle, Kedzie/Lawrence and Clark north of Foster quite a while back. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, she was doing food tours of Chicago long before there was a Food Channel.

For those who may not recognize Robert's name, he wrote Make Mine Medium Rare on how to get the most out of restaurant experiences and effective complaining. He also cowrote a book with Alpana Singh Alpana Pours: About Being a Woman, Loving Wine, and Having Great Relationships.

Always a pleasure to get feedback from you.

    All the best,
    Cathy2
