Ugh, I just missed your replies, as I left on Saturday, July 12, and returned yesterday (July 16). It turned out that I tried only one BBQ place, and it was not a great one in my opinion--Fat Buddies BBQ and Ribs in Waynesville.
I did have some terrific non-BBQ good, however, including outstanding Indian and German dishes at the Flying Frog Cafe in Asheville, and some really good country ham at an upscale bistro (of all places!) called Que Sera in Black Mountain.
We tried to go to Keaton's in Statesville for BBQ, but they are closed on Sundays, which is the day we were closest to them.
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll definitely keep them in mind when I return to the Asheville area.
