Good BBQ Places Between Greensboro and Asheville, NC?

Post #1 - July 9th, 2008, 8:27 amWe will be traveling from Chapel Hill to Asheville next weekend and will want to stop at a restaurant somewhere about an hour or two east of Asheville for lunch. I'd like to hit a BBQ joint that is just off of Route 40 if possible. Any suggestions? We will be traveling on a Sunday, so Keaton's isn't an option. Thanks!

Post #2 - July 12th, 2008, 12:46 pmI recommend Lexington BBQ #1 in Lexington, NC. It is off I85, but really a fairly short - and worthy - detour from I40. As you drive further west the BBQ gets less interesting, especially when you get near Asheville. Lexington is one of the best in the state. Tomato-based, not vinegar or mustard.

Post #3 - July 16th, 2008, 3:01 pmIf you get a bit northwest beyond Asheville, you really should consider another 45mins drive to Ridgewood bbq in Bluff City. It's certainly the best in eastern TN/western NC.

Post #4 - July 17th, 2008, 1:04 pmUgh, I just missed your replies, as I left on Saturday, July 12, and returned yesterday (July 16). It turned out that I tried only one BBQ place, and it was not a great one in my opinion--Fat Buddies BBQ and Ribs in Waynesville.
I did have some terrific non-BBQ good, however, including outstanding Indian and German dishes at the Flying Frog Cafe in Asheville, and some really good country ham at an upscale bistro (of all places!) called Que Sera in Black Mountain.
We tried to go to Keaton's in Statesville for BBQ, but they are closed on Sundays, which is the day we were closest to them.
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll definitely keep them in mind when I return to the Asheville area.

pork shoulders lightly smoked then sliced chopped or pulled
sauces small amounts of tomato sugar salt into a mostly vinegar base
the eastern part of the state some of the countrys oldest bbq 160 years in one place i read
almost all
whole hog chopped into sandwiches no tomato or sugar in the sauce
mild smoke flavor
not the heavy smoke with pink smoke ring you would see in texas and kc
havent been there but im really looking forward to trying it

I realize it's too late, but for future reference I would second Lexington BBQ #1. However, I would also highly recommend a stop at Clark's in Kernerville. It's just off of Highway 40, less than 10 minutes away from the Greensboro-High Point airport. I prefer Lex #1, but Clark's is right up there.
