Indian for Beginners near Downers Grove?

My mom is in the mood to try Indian/Pakistani for the first time. She doesn't dig very spicy stuff, and wants to start out simple. Other than Sabri Nehari in Lombard I don't know of any places to take her. Any suggestions for a place near Downer's Grove or between there and Niles, not too expensive or fancy, that has dealt with dainty palates?

Viceroy of India on Roosevelt Road in Lombard has a lunch buffet. Buffets are usually a good way to learn the food. Every Indian buffet I have been to in the suburbs has been well monitored to keep the food fresh. I think you will find very little spice (as in heat) but lots of flavor!

Very good Indian food. Comparable to a lot of very good places on Devon. If you're interested in the buffet, they have one for lunch and dinner, I believe.

Again, very good food all around.

I've been to both of the above. Both have a nice variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Also, the cuisine at both is primarily North Indian. Shikira is a little nicer, with good food; Taste of India IMHO has better food but is less fancy. I don't believe that Shikira's prices reflect the nicer decor either. Both are definitely worth trying.

Try Saffron in Westmont (on Cass, just north of 63rd, in the strip mall after Jockey) or Madras Palace or Shree (both on NE corner of Cass and Ogden).

Another one is Sher-A-Punjab on 63rd and Woodward, next to the newly opened branch of Westbrook Market. They have a buffet for both lunch and dinner.

India House has several locations around the area, including one in Oak Brook. I think it's as good a place as any to take an Indian food newbie. Tucked way back in an office park, the Oak Brook location has an elegant interior and features a sizable buffet at lunchtime. Though there's no dedicated thread on LTH, I think India House is generally well-regarded, with opinions ranging from outright love to serviceable. I fall closer to the love side of the scale.

I suggest saffron as well, but get the lunch buffet. The interior is nice, the food is good, and there are usually some pretty tame dishes. You also get a plate of sizzlin tandori chicken(at least on weekends) with the lunch buffet.

i agree with India House Lunch Buffet for indian beginners; go on a weekend to the oak brook location and you should be pleased.

This is our work group lunch/celebration spot and everyone always seems to like it (Indians, those who like Indian food, and newbies). They have tables in the back where you look out over a little pond that are nice for dinner. (No buffet at dinner though.)

I'd throw one in for Shikara. I've never been here for lunch so I can't speak on whether or not they have a lunch buffet. My husband and I go here pretty regularly. They have a large menu, nice portion size, and they will help first timers with suggestions and also tone the heat up and down on your dishes per your request.
