    Cheese events at Pastoral, 7/20-27

The following press release covers events that might be of interest to any friends of fromage:

Award-winning Pastoral kicks off the American Cheese Society’s festivities with in-store events throughout the week — Sunday, July 20, through Sunday, July 27

    WHAT

Pastoral will host a variety of free, in-store events from Sunday, July 20 - Sunday, July 27 to celebrate the American Cheese Society’s 25th Anniversary Conference in Chicago. Events will be held at both Pastoral locations in Chicago’s Loop at 53 East Lake Street and in Lakeview at 2945 North Broadway. For more information, call 312-658-1250.

    EVENT SCHEDULE

    Sunday, July 20, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (LAKEVIEW)

Meet the Cheesemaker — David Gremmels, Rogue Creamery of Central Point, Oregon

One of the most awarded cheese producers in the U.S., Rogue has been around for generations — dating back to the pioneering days of famed Ig Vella and the Kraft family. Rogue has developed a long way since then, leading the way as one of the first producers of American artisan cheese to export to Europe. David and his partner Cary Bryant are the makers of such beloved Pastoral favorites as Rogue River Blue (wrapped in grape leaves and soaked in pear brandy), Crater Lake Blue, Echo Mountain Blue and the distinctive Smokey Blue.

    Tuesday, July 22, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (LOOP)

Meet the Cheesemaker — Mary Keehn, Cypress Grove of Arcata, California

Cypress Grove is the renowned cheesemaker of award-winning Humbolt Fog and the delicious Truffle Tremor. Mary, who is a veteran of artisan cheesemaking and one of the true pioneers of chevre, won best product line overall at the New York Fancy Food Show in 2007.

    Wednesday, July 23, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (LOOP)

Meet the Cheesemaker — Mike Gingrich, Uplands Cheese of Dodgeville, Wisconsin

Mike, his wife Carol and the Patenaude family create only one cheese, but it is a force to be reckoned with — Pleasant Ridge Reserve, a cow's milk cheese that is the only cheese to be twice-named Best in Show at the American Cheese Society Championships. Produced only when there is nutrient-rich green clover and grass for the cows to eat, this cheese has a natural yellow palor and an addictive nuttiness.

    Wednesday, July 23, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (LAKEVIEW)

Meet the Cheesemaker — Brenda Jensen, Hidden Springs Creamery of Westby, Wisconsin

One of the new rock stars of the artisan cheese world, Hidden Springs hails from the Driftless region of Western Wisconsin. Their rich sheep milk cheeses, from fresh and soft to aged and flavorful, are creating quite a stir and garnering several prizes. Featured on Britain's BBC, Hidden Springs does things the old fashioned way — horses still pull the plows. Meet Brenda, who dropped out of Corporate America to live her own American Dream.

    Thursday, July 24, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (LOOP)

Janet Fletcher — Renowned Cheese Book Author and San Francisco Chronicle Columnist

Janet, one of the country's foremost experts on artisan cheese and wine, will sign copies of her new book, Cheese & Wine: A Guide to Selecting, Pairing and Enjoying and her popular classic, The Cheese Course. Pastoral will also serve cheese and wine selections from Janet's book.

    Friday, July 25, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (LOOP)

Meet the Cheesemaker — John Loomis, Zingerman’s Creamery of Ann Arbor, Michigan

Anyone who knows legendary Zingerman's knows that whatever it is, it's delicious. And they make their own cheeses. Meet John Loomis and taste his rich cheeses of goat and cow milk.

Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 – All Day (LOOP and LAKEVIEW)

    Cheese Sale at Pastoral

Buy delicious competition cheeses from the American Cheese Society at delicious prices — take home a hunk for everyone in the family to use for cooking, snacking or sharing with neighbors. A one-time only opportunity!
