I went to Petersen's in Oak Park recently, and although the joint was adorable and the hot fudge sundae (my very first Tin Roof!) was tasty (mostly due to the fudge, oh my), it didn't satisfy my fountain creation craving. Maybe because the that was a pretty long ride just for a Tin Roof. Also, I really wanted their Fudge Royale sundae, but they were out of bananas. WTF? And the youth behind the counter had a bit of an attitude, as though she could like, totally not believe she was there on a Sunday, OMG.

Somewhere I read about a joint that is so proud of their phenomenal hot fudge sauce that it serves you a bowl on the side. Where is this, does anyone know? I looked it up here, on yelp.com, and possibly chireader.com and metromix, and can't figure it out.

    Much appreciated.

    Vive la fudge!

Margie's definitely serves the sauce on the side upon request. I usually get it with a scoop of coconut ice cream :)

I have fond memories of Peterson's (if they still operate like they did a couple years ago they make their hot fudge on site), but I've recently been wandering around the Oak Lawn area and there are two solid ice cream places there:

    Cupid Candies
    4709 W 95th St
    Oak Lawn, IL 60453
(the service can be a little like what you described at Peterson's, though)

    and

    Millie's Ice Cream & Coffee
    5172 W. 95th St.
    Oak Lawn, IL 60453
(my pick of the two, honestly)

I've always found Margie's hot fudge to be astoundingly salty and not very reminiscent of chocolate. My wife loves the hot fudge sundaes from The Chocolate Shoppe on Devon (and other Chocolate Shoppe outlets do nicely as well, like Sweet Occasions)

The place I'm thinking of just gives it to you, request or no. But I do remember liking Margie's. I went with Pie Dude during the early days.

Margie's has, in my experience, always and only put the fudge in a small "boat" on the side. I think that's their S.O.P.

Zephyr always served their hot fudge in a little cup on the side, but alas, they are no more.
    We crack us up.

I think all the places we went on this Thon served it on the side.

Allow me to join in the Margie's chorus, as my Friday night was capped off with the spectacular Atomic Fudge sundae (that's 2 sizable scoops, hard chocolate, and hot fudge on the side with whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry). It was particularly enjoyable after what I felt was a subpar hot fudge from Cunis Candies earlier in the week. Although the chocolate covered strawberries there were excellent.
Homer: Oh, God, why do you mock me?

Marge: Homer, that's not God. That's a waffle that Bart threw on the ceiling.

Homer [contemplatively, to waffle]: I know I should not eat thee, but...[takes bite]
    ...Mmmmmm. Sacra-licious.
