The Family has a weekly dinner get together at Grandma's or a close by relative's every Wednesday. Everyone takes a turn cooking or ordering. Since the wife has to drive an hour to get there, she usually opts to order something when it's her turn.

Any reasonably-priced carryout around the Harlem/Dempster/Golf Mill area that we should know about? Nothing fancy, almost any food will do but trying to avoid fast food. No burger/gyros joints, no KFC, no Boston Chicken. She wants to get out of the pizza rut.

First place that comes to mind:

    Periyali Greek Taverna
    9860 Milwaukee Ave.
    Glenview, IL

Even though it's a Glenview address, it's just a block or two north of Golf Mill on Greenwood.

(edited to correct my directional mistake pointed out by hattyn - thanks hattyn!)

I strongly second the Periyali recommendation, and also add the Pita Inn outpost just one door south of there as well. Also, slightly further South is Siam's House, which has pretty decent Thai food.

As long as you're on Milwaukee you can go a little south to Booby's for some great steak sandwiches. A little further south, just past Howard, is Chicken Inn for good broasted chicken.

I suggest Rossini's (NW corner Milwaukee and Dempster)

Not only do they do "Red Sauce-Italian", they also have many seafood items and specials on their menu that IMO are very good. All menu items are available for carryout---They also make excellent calamari.

Los Comales is perfectly acceptable Mexican. I've heard good and bad about Tacos el Norte next to the CVS at Milwaukee and Greenwood.

I've never been disappointed with Pita Town at Milwaukee and Ballard.

Chicken Inn, already recommended, has pleased my family for years.

Himalaya has been discussed here before and may be worth looking into. Its near the top of my to-try list next time I'm in town. (I'm away at school in Milwaukee)

I know you said no fast food but its worth mentionin that SuperDawg is an easy drive up Milwaukee.

Huh. Where is Booby's, again? (Right near Pita-Inn/Periyali, on Milwaukee, I
always pass "Goodys" and havent stopped yet - is that the one you
meant? Or is there a different Booby's?)

Also, as has been pointed out, Himalaya is right around the corner from
there for Indian/Nepali food that has been well-reviewed on here (havent
been there yet myself). And Pinocchio's is round the corner for
Pizza, also well-reviewed. Cafe Lucci is only a quarter mile down the
road on Milwaukee (someone reviewed it, well, only a month ago on here IIRC?)

The Red Apple Polish Buffet on Milwaukee just west/north of Devon has pre-set catering buffets to go advertised at their cash register. The food is always good filling and hearty there.

Huh. Is it that easy a drive? Iam blanking on the cross-street for SuperDawg,
but isnt it like Nagle or something? Thats quite a ways from Golf, really -
the fries would be cold by the time you got there, for one :-) Or is it
    closer than I imagined?

Superdawg is at ~devon and milwaukee, which makes it maybe 4-5 miles from golf/mill. Not too bad at all, actually... 10 minute drive.

I suppose not the shortest drive from Golf Mill. I was thinking Niles in general. Niles extends pretty far south almost to Devon, in fact.

    Eat,

I'll second Steve Z's recommendation of Siam's House, though I give them a higher rating than "pretty decent".

Next door to Siam's House is Bacik's, a vest pocket size Polish deli, with prepared foods, including quite good soups, sausage, bread etc. Not 50-yards North of Bacik's is Minelli Brother's, a full service Italian grocery with deli meats, prepared salads and excellent fresh mozzarella.

Just North, quite near Brendan's recommendation of Chicken Inn, is Niles Grill. Niles Grill is a bustling diner with tv going, newspapers strewn about, counter, as well as table, seating and 2 older Greek guys doing a beautifully choreographed Grill Man ballet.

I've only been once, my tuna melt was excellent, and what I observed being served looked quite good, in a large, though not ridiculous, diner portion fashion. I'm looking forward to return visits and will be sure to bring my camera.

Please let us know if you enjoyed any of the recommendations and/or found new spots.

Niles is wierdly shaped. Long and skinny. It makes a lot of Niles seem to be actually not in Niles (or is that the other way around.) It seems like nearly every part of Niles is adjacent to another town, and often two towns. Where we once lived, near Oakton and Greenwood, was like Niles, Park Ridge and Des Plaines all together (and even Glenview when you got to the north end of Greenwood). Which is a long way of saying, when we lived in Niles, we hardly ever thought of that Southern section, close to Chicago, as "Niles", and pretty much never went to Superdawg. (Traveling into the city, we always took Caldwell.)

    OK, other food ideas:

No one's mentioned the ne plus ultra of Grandma kinda places, Omega. The foods OK (but as they say, there's lots of it). It's on Golf.

In the same plaza as Omega, is a very cool grocery store that specializes in ethnic foods, primarily Russian. I am not sure if you can *just* get a meal from their fares, but there are all sortsa cool smoked fishes, meats, etc.

I believe the Korean place, Kimchee Cabana has been mentioned before on this board (if Gramdma likes it spicy!). It was the first Korean food I ever tried.

You say no gyros, but one of the best (if not best) gyros stands in Chicago, is nearby. The Works, on Golf east of Golf Mill.

    Rob,

The last two times I was in Omega, there were some sanitation/freshness issues that will cause me never to retrurn again.

Something wrong here. Chicken Inn is down around Howard. 8850 would put Niles Grill north of Dempster.

    Midas,

Niles Grill is North of Dempster, maybe I am thinking of the wrong chicken joint. The one I am thinking of is just North of Niles Grill, next strip mall North, and features Broasted Chicken.

Right at dempster and milwaukee is Sphinx Cafe, also, which serves pretty good egyptian/middle eastern food. Especially good, spicy, fried to order felafel.

The space turns into a nightclub after diners leave, but for lunch I'd imagine it'd be pretty relaxed.

To elaborate on Goodi's.I had spinach pie which was average tasting to me but it was flaky. The onion rings seemed straight from the freezer, several spots were ice cold.I cannot remember what Karen had but the fries she had with her meal were limp.

Has anyone found the chicken place Gary mentioned?

    Midas,

I was flat out wrong about a chicken place being just North of Nile's Grill, sorry. The chicken place in question is, as you said, Chicken Inn and is, as you said, "around Howard" (and Milwaukee)

I must have been thinking of Captain Alex's, which is just North of Nile's Grill.
