Comedian Jeff Foxworthy says that humor is all around us--we just have to look for it. So with this truism in mind, I headed to the grocery store to find amusing food.

First stop was the dairy case, where one sign jumped out at me: LOL Butter for $1.99. We're a Fleischmann's family, so I was understandably unfamiliar with Laugh-Out-Loud Butter. A dairy clerk sensed my bewilderment and offered assistance.

"Nu, so tell me about this Laugh-Out-Loud Butter. Is it tasty?"

    "What brand?" he stammered.

"LOL Butter--just like the sign says."

"The 'LOL' stands for 'Land O' Lakes,' Fresser. You've been spending too much time in chat rooms."

Undeterred, I ambled to the condiments & spices aisle--there must be something chuckleworthy there. I was not disappointed. There on the shelf sat ROFL'S Spicy Mustard. Now, I find mustard seed and turmeric as amusing as the next gourmand, but this condiment just didn't make me laugh. So I availed myself again of the intrepid grocery clerk.

"Please tell me, kind Sir--just what IS so funny about this Roll-on-Floor-Laughing Mustard? You know--the one with ROFL in the name."

"Fresser!" the clerk wailed. "The label says, "Rolf," not "ROFL" for heavens sake! Go clean those Coke-bottle glasses of yours. And cut down on the web-surfing. You really should get out more."

So, to paraphrase the song, I'm still looking for laughs in all the wrong places. Maybe I'll bring Foxworthy along next time...]

Yes, we've started referring to our standard Easter dinner as "Laugh Out Loud," too.... :D

Meanwhile, I have just lost ten minutes of my life by googling "LOL Butter" (of course, this post is the first hit, but I highly recommend the top five or so)

In what language is this thread written? Reminds me of being the last kid in school to figure out pig latin. I'm completely lost.

LOL is a chat-room acronym--it stands for Laugh Out Loud. It's a way of conveying your laughter via instant messaging screens.

So when I saw LOL Butter butter advertised, I thought to myself, "What's so funny about a dairy spread?"

Thanks Fresser - I got that, but it's the stuff related to the post above, and the reference to Easter that are completely over my head.

:D I suppose our Easter meal isn't as traditional as I'd assumed - we usually have leg of lamb.

I think the Easter reference involves the lamb-shaped butter served at a Catholic dinner table. How a nice Member-of-the-Tribe like me knows this, I don't know...

As far as the psychedelic LOL Butter web page, I await others' interpretations.

Ha! That reminds me of the time I drove past a car wash offering a wash and a polish and the only thing my brain could make of that was how cool I thought it was to combine a hot dog stand with a car wash. Very convenient!

BTW, Fresser, welcome to LTHForum! I found your post amusingly qwerty.

As to my own shenanigans within this thread:

The LOL butter squaw is holding a package of LOL butter featuring her image, which is holding a package of LOL butter with her picture on it, etc. A great example of self-reference with infinite regress. A loop.

The Morton Salt Girl is obviously holding a carton of Morton Salt, though her arm covers her own picture. Another feedback loop, though this time without infinite regress.

My inspiration for this is the new book I Am A Strange Loop, by Douglas Hofstadter. It is a sequel of sorts to his Pulitzer Prize winning book Gödel, Escher, Bach.

I'd be interested in other food related self-reference loops, particularly in the visual medium, as there are aplenty in prose right here. I bet them French have plenty!
