I remember there was a small place right off armitage and a side street that served primarily new england style food. They had clam chowder and a great lobster roll but I'm not sure if they are still around I'll have to do a drive by soon to see. Does anyone know where I can find an authentic new england style lobster roll sandwich in chicagoland? Thanks!

There's a cafe on Clark at about Webster (or so) that has them, or at least they did over the summer. They were actually pretty good.

Thanks for the link, after reading though it I'll be going into Shaw's Crab House tonight to try out this lobster roll since it seems to be the most authentic.

The place you're thinking of was probably Glory, which is now Scylla.
Anyway-I've had good (don't know enough to say authentic)lobster rolls at Shaw's-I would stick to the Blue Crab Lounge side of Shaw's- a better atmosphere IMHO. Also you can get whatever you want from the other side anyway. Nice chowder, bisque, oysters...

I second the Shaw's/Blue Crab lounge recommendation. Their lobster role is yummy. It won't be like getting one on the Maine coast, but then this is Chicago.

Just yesterday a friend of mine (with fine taste in food) was waxing poetic about the lobster rolls at Hugos Frog Bar. Since they serve a lot of lobster, I would imagine that the quality of their lobster roll would be very high. As I am mayonnaise averse, I am not a consumer of this item.

I really do miss Glory. They had what I thought was the best clam chowder in town.

Glory was great... I loved their blueberry pie, chowder, lobster roll, etc.... But you have to admit, they were way to pretentious for their own good.

Perhaps a sushi-style roll with lobster as the main component.
Perhaps a bun stuffed with lobster and sealed like a bacon bun...
Anyway, to get back off base-I am happy we have Scylla.

I've had the lobster roll from Shaw's downtown on hubbard quite a few times, it's decent but sorry, not worth the 20$... Well I guess it is if you're in chicago because there are not any other options!
I'm not picky, I just have more tastebuds than you... ; )

If you're up for making your own lobster rolls at home, I have seen the necessary top-split buns at Sunset Food Stores.

We'll be en route on our first trip to Maine in exactly 2 weeks!! Not to sound ignorant here, but What exactly is a lobster roll??? The only solid plans we have are to hit a lot of lobster pounds while out there and I'm sure lobster rolls will be included! Haven't even decided on where to stay because the options are immense & overwhelming!

A lobster roll is generally mild, chunky lobster salad served on a split-top hot-dog bun. It's a wonderful sandwich. It is usually, but not always, mayo-based. Some are creamier than others, some are just touched with a little mayo.

Here's a post from a trip of mine that included Maine and plenty of lobster rolls. At the bottom of the post are links to similar trips from stevez and Seth Zurer.

There are plenty of tips on where to stay and what to eat in Maine in those threads.

Have a wonderful trip. It's hard not to when you're eating in Maine.

    Best,
    Michael

Here's a good place to start; particularly because the first thing you see is a picture of a lobster roll. There are a couple of other threads worth searching for as well.

Thank you all so very much!!! To think I've spent countless hours on TripAdvisor looking for places to eat & stay when I could've started right here on LTH! The thought never crossed my mind! Now instead of feeling so overwhelmed, I finally getting excited about our upcoming trip!

Hmmm..... wonder if the airlines would let me bring a sack of lobster rolls back to Chicago as a big 'thank you' for passing the information along!!

    aw, shucks :: :oops: ::

Now, I can't guarantee you'll find top-split buns at Sunset all the time, but I am certain that I saw them there, much to my delight, having just recently read the lobster roll chapter, entitled "On a Roll," in Jeffrey Steingarten's It Must Have Been Something I Ate.
