    Hello all,

My wife has a hankering for a Chinese restaurant with excellent war mein. Can anyone help? I'm not much of a chinese food guy, so I've not kept up on it. Thanks very much for your help!

Maybe not specifically war mein, but GNR Winner Katy's Dumpling House is close to Naperville (that's where you are, right?) and has some of the best noodle dishes in Chicagoland. Also, GNR Winner Fabulous Noodles in Lisle is well...fabulous. If you are very specifically looking for war mein and war mein only, then Chinese Kitchen in Westmont might be a good place to start. I'd call ahead and ask if they serve war mein first, but their food is otherwise excellent.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the recommendations. I think we'll go with Katy's, as they're open today. Being a GNR winner certainly helps!

I got someone at Chinese Ktichen, but there was a huge language issue. I did ultimately find out that they don't have war mein.

    All the best,

I'm just curious what your wife would describe as war mein. I know what it is, as a Hong Kong style Cantonese dish, but I often see it on takeout Chinese menus and KNOW that's not what I would get if ordered. What exactly is the war mein that your spouse is accustomed to? If it's the same as the Hong Kong style, I may have a recommendation.

Incidentally, the one I am accustomed to is served with shrimp, greens and yee-mein.

The above was eaten at Triple Crown in Chinatown, but they have a branch near you, which is also incidentally very close to Katy's.

Her definition of war mein is pretty loose. It's basically a chop suey type of dish but with large noodles instead of rice.

We went to Katy's Dumpling House yesterday. The food was very tasty, but extremely salty. I'm still feeling the affects of salt overload today. We had the beef noodle dish and the pork noodle dish. We also had a couple of egg rolls, which were good.

I haven't had their specific version, but I had a very good meal at Shanghai Inn last week (sometimes you want a break from the beef and maw) and noticed War Mein on the menu. If the other great American/Cantonese style dishes were any indication, I expect their version will do the trick.
