ROYAL.CHICKEN.RESTURANT

Pigmon and I stopped by J's Meats to find out what's going on with the hot tamales these days. Seems like a problem of mismatched supply (Yoland can make only so many) and demand (people can't seem to get enough). Hopefully they'll get things straightened out sometime soon.

Every trip to J's, I see Royal Chicken but always figure it closed years ago. The other day I noticed the door was open. Finally a chance to have chicken fit for a king!



Inside it resembles a small boxcar but with a lower ceiling.



The menu is mostly chicken (livers and gizzards too), fish and "Pizz-Puffs." I sort of expected the chicken to be either phenomenal or absolutely wretched but, wouldn't you know, it was merely decent. The wings, with hot and mild, were fresh and hot and surprisingly similar to Harold's.

Impressive to say the least.
I have been eating Madison Ave chicken and tips for years and never stumbled upon Royal Chicken. I am googling the address now and can not seem to picture the place.

I hope to correct this situation shortly.

My favorite in that area is Joe's Barbeque & Fish‎ just the otherside of Cicero at 4900 Madison. He makes a pretty mean link if you like hot and sage. Additionally Joe and his son Chris, who operate the Joes on North ave as well as another location, are nice people. I only mention this because I have been witness to some pretty kind acts on their behalf toward people in trouble in the community and I have had their donated food on more than 1 occasion.

What can I say, Royal Chicken keeps a low profile.

There was some discussion of Joe's here. I think Joe's hot link is a good example of the cornmeal-filled style often found on the West Side. I do like it (and it's certainly hot) but I have to say I prefer Uncle John's version.

It seems that ROYAL.CHICKEN.RESTURANT might be closed permanently. Both the building and land are for sale.

Royal Chicken seems to have new owners and is sportin' a new look.
