certainly won't be the first time G&J's has been under water - i remember it happening last year at least once and it's happened in years previous to that.

Hopefully nothing detrimental comes of this - it hasn't in the past.

I think they just hose the place down and go about their business.

What about Paradise Pup in Des Plaines?

A buddy told me he thought he saw the Las Asada's in Des Plaines pretty well flooded also.

Las Asada was definitely under water. Although I can't be certain, I can't imagine how Paradise Pup could have escaped being flooded. River Road was an inland sea from just south of Dempster to just north of Touhy. The flood waters ran west into the side streets almost two blocks from River. Oakton just opened up to traffic today.

River Road at Oakton was blocked off today when i drove by there in the morning so there was no way to get to PP. I didn't see any water when i looked down that way.

That intersection was open for traffic and bone dry when I went through there a little after 2:00pm. Looking south there was still standing water with city issued traffic horses blocking the road. I'll try and drive by again later tonight to see if there is any progress.

A friend of mine who teaches in Des Plaines said that the river was supposed to be back to its normal state by 6am tomorrow; I'd check then...or the Des Plaines school website has lots of info to indicate if it's worth a trip.

I got an e-mail from Kitakata (Arlington Heights, Golf and AH Rd) to say they got flooded. Fortunately, another e-mail arrived a couple of days later to say they were back in business. So apparently you didn't even need to be near the river to get inundated.

Dang...I'm glad I got to G&J's last week before the flood. Hopefully it'll be nice and clean by the time I come back to town next week.

I drove by today around 7:00pm. The BP/McD's (I still miss the Thirsty Whale) was closed and unlit. There were employees in Gene & Jude's, but it was not open and the parking lot was blocked by police tape. I suspect they will be open tomorrow. That whole stretch of road smelled like fish, not in a bad or good way, but in a way that was different than before.

There has been numerous reports on what to do cleaning wise in a home after a flood and it's a nightmare. Basically unless you rip everything out and napalm the remaining structure you might not get to all the sources for mold,odors and disease.

I'm wondering (hoping) if the building/health departments have to make an inspection before re-opening a food establishment.

You can guarantee the Health Department will inspect a flooded restaurant before allowing the establishment to conduct business again.

Ouch.

Is this policy written in stone or is it just "more likely" to happen? And, do they have a plan to inspect all these places in a timely manor so business can resume as fast as possible?

Gene and Jude's flooded last year and I called to see if they were open:

"Gene and Jude's, can I help you?"

"Nice, so you're not underwater"

"I wouldn't say that, but we're open..."

Does the village of River Grove even have a health department? It's not listed on their web site.

Presumably they have a sanitarian, possibly a contractor, who does restaurant inspections, but it's unlikely to be a rigorous program.

Some years ago I contracted severe food poisoning after eating in a restaurant in Mount Prospect. The hospital where I had to have intravenous fluids did a culture, diagnosed campylobacterosis and reported the case to the Illinois Department of Health, which interviewed me. Because of various circumstances during the possible incubation period, it became clear it had to be this particular meal. I called Mount Prospect, just to alert them in case they had other complaints about the place, telling them where they could access the official reports.

Mount Prospect doesn't have a health department but its one, beleaguered sanitarian duly called me back and said that, coincidentally, he had inspected the restaurant the day after I had eaten there, and they had scored 50 out of 100 on the inspection, so he had already ordered the staff to sanitation school. But the restaurant was never closed.

On the other hand, yesterday Mount Prospect had four or five cops standing out on Rand Road peering into cars and issuing $20 tickets to individuals endangering public safety by failing to wear their seat belts.

Any update on Gene and Jude's? Is it still under water?

I forgot to ask what day they re-opened, but Gene('s) & Jude's was as good as ever yesterday.

On Monday it was open and delicious, but the gas station/ McD was still closed.
