On the way to work today I noticed signs in the old Gino's East location at Ontario and Wells that said "Mitchell's Soda Shop." Does anyone have information? Is this the same fabled Mitchell's from the south side?

Yes, it is. The store was reopened by investors from Gino's East, and they do sell the ice cream at all of the Gino's East locations, IIRC.

As I live less than two blocks from Mitchell's in Homewood, I will probably not be going out of my way to try that location. But I can tell you that their hot fudge sundae with chocolate chip ice cream is damn good. They are using the original recipes from George Mitchell and have added a few new flavors. Some candy is made in-house, some is not. You have to ask.

Is Gino's East no longer at this location?

Gino's is still there. The Mitchell's is in the Wells and Ontario corner of the same building. The little space there is an architectural oddity; I don't know what it was originally used for in the Planet Hollywood days, but it doesn't connect to the main dining room.

I hadn't really paid much notice to Mitchell's, but it's only a block from my work; I'll have to check it out.

It used to be where you could buy overpriced Planet Hollywood T-shirts and other crap, IIRC.
