I signed up for the Binny's Beverage Depot discount card thingy yesterday to get a few bucks off a purchase of a couple bottles of Southern Tier beers. (The PumKing is spectacular again this year, and I can't wait to get into the Cherry Saison.)

Is anyone else a member of this savings "club?" I didn't give them my email, but the woman at the checkout said there were coupons involved, there's wine discounts, and maybe some cigar discounts.

Anyone have any experience with this?

If you give them your email address, you get periodic emails with discount coupons that you can print (but I believe you have to show your card to use them). Twice in the past 2-3 months, there have been coupons for 15% off wine and spirits on one particular day -- see the below for the most recent:

I have not had much use for the Binny's discount program personally -- points are applied to your account only when you buy wine and I don't buy too much wine there. But, if you want to enjoy any sale prices, you will need the card.

The best use, I've found, for the discount program is for discounted prices on tasting events. It might be $5-10 off which... well, it's something.

FWIW, I prefer Sam's program -- a point for every dollar spent, regardless of what it was spent on. After 250 points, you get a coupon for 5% off. Nothing too much, but it's something, and it can be easy to obtain (which... maybe isn't something to be sharing? :D )

Most benefits apply to wine purchases. You don't accumulate any points for beer purchases, which sucks for me since that's the only thing I purchase there. There are discounts in-store and the occassional email coupon like posted above. You also get emails about different tasting events in advance.

I'm a member of Sam's program also. One small clarification: when you accumulate 250 points, you get a $5 coupon, not a 5%-off coupon. So you are getting 2% off (=5/250). It's not much. But the bigger benefit of being a Sam's member is that many things are on-sale to members only - just like the Jewel and Dominick's cards, as I understand it. You also get discounts on tastings, delivery, etc.

It makes you buy stuff you normally wouldn't only because it's a good deal.

    :D

It does save you money. Their prices are still better than anywhere else I've found - with or without the card.

I'm not familiar with the Sam's program, but I do pack a Binny's Frequent Drinker card. You get 2% off your next purchase after spending $500, and it's taken right at the register - no coupons involved. If you go there much, I don't see any reason not to get one.

AFAIK, sam's changed theirs to be instant too... i was there a few visits ago and they took $10 off because i had accumlated enough points. they used to mail you a gift card but they said they no longer do that. (actually, i used the gift card the week prior and it had long expired and turned into a big fiasco, took about 15 minutes for them to manually take it off)

That's weird, I have had Sam's give me the instant 10$ in the past but over the last 6 mo or so have received a coupon in the mail and had to bring it in. When I inquired about it at the Sam's off of Clybourne they told me you had to bring the coupons in now.

Sam's totally redid it's rewards program at some point in the last year or so. I am pretty sure that it is less generous now than what it used to me.

Agreed, it's a small thing, but means you get 10 bucks off after $500 of wine purchasing. And you don't need to carry your card, they'll look it up by name. There are some sales, too, as mentioned above.

Until recently I would have agreed, but I have found Woodsmen's pricing to be even lower than Binny's at least on the unusual stuff I recently bought. 17% lower on Malort, a couple dollars less on 1.5L vermouths. While not convenient for many, Woodmen's does have a unque selection and emphasis. No cards here except debit.

Sam's card seems better than Binny's in every regard-they have an occasional freebie (I got a cutting board), they let you know how far you are from a coupon-I've added to a purchase to get the coupon, everything counts, and fulfillment seems to be more automatic.
