Munster IN. joints

If one were to visit 3 Floyd's brew pub in Munster, would there be other interesting cafes, diners, bars, whatever in or around town?

Be advised, 3 Floyd's just changed chefs. In my opinion the food isn't as good, but if you've never been there before you won't miss the 4 cheese ale dip like I do.

Well, you could always stop by Munster Donut for a sober-up cup of coffee and a couple donuts. It's open 24 hours and on the way to the expressway, so it's perfect for that. Here's a link to a thread with details.

If you come on a Tuesday night, go a little farther down 45th St almost into Highland for Dante's House of Pizza. They just built it where Stones Bones Ribs used to be located. It's the same family that runs the other House of Pizzas and Zuni's House of Pizzas around Northwest Indiana. They always have a really good (and inexpensive) thin-ish crust, but on Tuesday night they have all-you-can-eat Fried Chicken and Pizza. It's a treat that will someday land me in the hospital, I'm sure. Be sure to try the double crust if you like a thicker crust - and though they don't list it on the menu, they'll make your pizza with alfredo or Garlic butter instead of red sauce.

If you head west on Ridge Road, over the border into Lansing, IL, you'll run into Gayety's Chocolate & Ice Cream. They've been around the area since the 1920's, which I was astounded to find out as I only stumbled into their store for the first time a little over 2 years ago. It's a wonderful little olde fashioned ice cream shoppe. The sundaes are huge and topped with fresh made whipped cream (really fresh, they scoop it right from the kitchen-aid bowl) that's not over-sweetened, which I like as the ice cream and toppings are sweet enough on their own.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize they were open yet.

Well...there's always Cafe Borgia, Giovanni's, and Cafe Elise for higher-end dining. Munster has a large number of Mexican restaurants, most of them bland.

There are also several Chinese restaurants. Stay away from all but Fortune House, which is VERY good.

For good gyros and beef sandwiches, head over to Munster Gyros.

On Ridge near Hohman is the original, and IMO the best, Schoop's. (FYI, I call this the original because it was the first restaurant wholly-owned by the Schoop family and the first with the Schoop's name on the door. Allen Schoop first started making Schoopburgers at a long-gone place on Calumet Ave in Hammond, but he was an employee and not an owner.)

A block east of Schoop's is an outpost of John's Pizzeria, owned by a member of the family that owned the original in Calumet City. Carry-out only.

Schoop's not only brings back childhood memories, but is still one of my all time favorite burger places, including the metal can with you malt.

Add Pesto to that list. Last night we had a hard time convincing a couple waitresses that they actually could do Garlic Butter. Fortunately, the owner recognized us and stopped at our table to say hello just in time to inform the waitresses that there was garlic butter in the kitchen somewhere.

It was the best thin crust I've had in recent memory. All restaurants should offer garlic butter.

Gayety's gives you the metal can, too. So much malty goodness.
