Hi, I recently moved to Gurnee and I was wondering if any of you knew of any good places to eat here? My brother recommended this forum to me. There's a chinese/japanese buffet down the street from me, but it's horrible. It used to be called Yao Yao's, but now it is C&J Buffet. The sushi was some of the worst i've ever had. :( We've been driving to Deerfield to get some good sushi, but I was hoping to find something closer. If you could tell me about any good places that are in the surrounding area, I would really appreciate it. Thank you :)

I've found that Hayashi on Grand Ave. (Rte. 132) in Gurnee is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the north suburbs. Teriyakis, especially the salmon, is solid & the sushi is spot-on as well. Other than that, it's an ethnic culinary wasteland, I'm afraid.

I tried going there yesterday after work but they're closed from 3-5pm. :( One of the nurses told me about it, and I drove around for awhile trying to find it.

I highly recommend Tina's Italian Bake Shop for lunch (not for sushi, however). Really nice lunches and baked goods.

The Savanna House just opened on 41, just south of Wadsworth Road. I'm hoping to try it out soon.

I'm not a big fan of sushi, but there's Sushi Kushi Toyo in Lake Forest...it's a little closer than Deerfield.

Let us know what else you find in Gurnee, it's hard to find good, non-chain restaurants around here.

It's pretty much carry-out only but I would definitely recommend GNR-nominee Captain Porky's in Zion/Beach Park.

My friends and neighbors agree that the best restaurant within a reasonable distance is Cafe Pyrenees at Rts 21 and 137. Their Express Lunch Menu (on the back of the menu) offers excellent value. For $11 you get soup or salad, unlimited ice tea or soda and your choice of:

Sliced Roast Beef Sandwich on a French baguette with sautéed onions, swiss cheese and a side of au jus

Grilled & Marinated Chicken Sandwich on tomato Focaccia bread with caramalized onions, sautéed peppers and Brie cheese

Garden Salad, mixed greens tossed in a Dijon mustard vinaigrette and topped with avacado, marinated artichoke, grilled asparagus, vine ripe tomato and diced red onion

All with either homemade chips, fries or seasonal fruit. (They have excellent fries.)

The beef sandwich may be the best I've ever had. It's not to be missed. The chicken sandwich is also terrific. An out-of-town guest called it the best she's ever had.

There is always a fish of the day lunch special for $13. If available, grilled salmon with a merlot reduction sauce is excellent although my preference is with their lobster sauce. (The chef will sometimes make the substitution.)

The terrific lunches alone, served Tue through Fri, 11 AM - 3:30 PM, make this a Great Neighborhood Restaurant.

Another place of great value for lunch is Tang's Chinese in Grayslake. From 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM, Tue - Sat, you get soup, eggroll, hot tea and a choice of 27 entrees for $5.60. I love their beef chop suey but don't miss the Empress Chicken. Lightly breaded white meat mixed with broccoli, green pepper, water chestnuts and carrot in a barbeque sweet & sour sauce. (While listed as a hot & spicy dish, you can ask for it to be made mild.)

I just had lunch at Tina's Italian Bake Shop with a client today.

My fried eggplant sandwich was delicious. I would have liked a crustier bread but that is about my only complaint.

We arrived ~11:40AM by the time we left @ 12:30PM it was PACKED, 8 deep in line waiting to place to go orders.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.
