French onion soup

Sorry if this topic has been covered previously - but my text search here didnt return what I was looking for...

I'm looking for a good French onion soup in the suburbs. My favorite Montparnasse closed years ago. There have been others that offered a decent version but they seem to be few and far between.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

The Golden Steer in Forest Park does a great French Onion soup.

I know it's a chain, but Mimi's cafe has amazing FOS. It's the only thing I've eaten there, and I have even picked up some togo on occasion.

I had some at the Mimi's in Overland Park, Kansas and was not too impressed. I'm not sure if it comes out of the same factory or not.

This is the only place that comes to mind when I think of French Onion soup.

"In the suburbs" covers a lot of territory. And suburban region in particular?

If you're northwest, Gridley's has an outstanding onion soup gratinée made with apples that is quite delicious.

If you're north, Café Central in Highland Park has classic French onion soup.

Sorry, I'm suburban, ie central DuPage County, but willing to travel for good gratinee..

Nice weekend scenic drive in perfect fall weather. Find a place that serves the worlds most perfect soup. Maybe a lardon heavy salad Lyonnaise. Drive home happy. Cant beat it.

It's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

Well, that does sound like the perfect meal. I'm a salade Lyonnaise addict myself, and that with soupe a l'oignon does sound like just about the best fall meal imaginable. Only problem is, I can't quite imagine both dishes at the same place. I'll have to work on that.

Both in the same place in France - unlikely...But we're here in the melting pot.
