Ever since my introduction to a plateful of sweet potato pancakes and cane syrup at Dwyer's in Lafayette, LA, I have been searching for them in Chicago, to no avail.

Does anyone know of a restaurant in the Chicago-area (or, within 100 miles?) that serves a good version? And chicory coffee, too?

Or, do you know of a local place to buy a mix? (Perhaps this part of the inquiry belongs in Shopping & Cooking, but I wanted to avoid double-posting.)

    Thanx for your help...Jim

    Dwyer's!

The best diner in the world!

I have nothing to address your question, good sir. Sorry. But I implore you to share more of your Lafayette tips.

Lafayette gets 0.000000001% the amount of national culinary discussion devoted to New Orleans. But the Hub City offers 90%, at least, the amount of eating interest afforded by NoLA.

(Which you, obviously, having been there, know.)

I have purchased Sweet Potato Pancakes at Whole Foods the past two Chanukah's. This year the first night is December 20th, and I am assuming that they will have them again.

This is going to sound odd, but I've had them at the Golden Nugget on Irving Park (near Kedzie, not Pulaski). I don't know if all the locations have them, but it was a late fall special last year, and they weren't bad at all. Last time I drove by, they announced pumpkin pancakes on their sign, so I'm not sure if that's instead of sweet potato this year, or if the sweet potato are yet to come.

Normally, Golden Nugget is the last place I would recommend, but it's the only place I've seen them in Chicago, and like I said, they were not bad.

I was at Chucks for breakfast this morning and on their new expanded breakfast menu, I saw sweet potatoe pancakes listed. Haven't tried them yet, but most items I try there always seem to turn out delicious. Chucks also has chickory coffee on their breakfast menu as well which I haven't tried.

Adding to that, had them this morning. Fantastic. Heavy, moist, filling. Order a main dish and split the pancakes with a friend!

Thanx for the update re Chuck's breakfast addition of SWP.

Sounds like a great reason to book a room after the gorp-out on 12/6 and return to the scene of the (wonderful) crime on Sunday for breakfast.

One more thing to note. they are open 7 days a week for breakfast now, so you don't have restrict your visit to the weekend as you needed to before.

Lurker coming out of the woodwork here. I just had sweet potato pancakes (served with cinnamon butter and sour cream) at Juicy-O in Downers Grove.

I have no affiliation with them, but I've eaten lots off their breakfast menu. ;)
