Has anyone heard of this or tried it, or better yet, purchased it in the Chicagoland area?
A remarkable ingredient that my family gets every few years as various relatives go back and forth between Palestine. What we get is homemade from one of my many aunts and comes in a 2 liter Pepsi bottle. It looks like spent motor oil but tastes absolutely divine. Think the best EVOO with a powerful, almost spicy hit of natural smoke. I often eat it as is with bread, or drizzle it on thickened yogurt (Labneh) and go to town.
I asked my dad once how its made and he related that the tree branches with the mature olives on them are chopped off the tree and smoldered in a pile. Somehow the olives are removed and pressed for oil. I'm sure this is not 100% accurate but it sounds about right.
Back to my original purpose for this thread: as I can only get it every so often, it would be great to find a local source.
Any help would be appreciated, comments on how damn delicious this stuff is also welcome.
