No-Frills Seafood in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale

I'm going to see family in the area over Thanksgiving, and promised my boyfriend (and myself) a stop for some yummy, no-frills fresh seafood, particularly shellfish. Anyone know a yummy seafood place in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area? We will be staying at my aunt's house in Pembroke Pines, but will also be in Miami, and will have a rental car. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, and in fact we'd probably prefer if it were more the sort of place where you throw your crab shells in a big pile. We're open to suggestions, though.

My favorite no frills seafood in the area is Seafood World in Lighthouse Point. Exceptionally fresh, they have their own boats, casual, inexpensive for quality, preparation and service with an attached fish store to boot.

I go for the stone crab in in season, my father loves the jumbo fried shrimp and they always have a good selection of local fish simply prepared with a nod toward the Caribbean. Conch fritters, peas and rice and a rotating list of seafood centric soups, not to mention terrific cole slaw, round out the offerings. Not much of a wine list, but you can't have everything.

Damn, that looks fabulous. I want to go there now, and I just ate lunch! Too bad I'm not going to be in FL until the 25th, and my boyfriend won't be there until Thanksgiving Day, and the earliest we could conceivably go there would be the Friday after Thanksgiving...

Rustic Inn has been around for over 50 years and it is terrific. Rumor has it that Bob Chinn patterned his restaurant after many of the things that he saw at Rustic Inn.

Whenever we are in South Florida, we make a beeline to Rustic Inn for their Garlic Blue Crabs.

I like Rustic Inn just fine, same with 15th Street Fisheries, but in the casual, maybe even very casual, Southern Palm Beach/Northern Broward county area seafood category Seafood World is my clear favorite.

It should be noted that both Rustic Inn and 15th Street have old school charm, full bars and a sense of history. Seafood World is an actual restaurant, with wine, beer and table service, but quite casual.

Anyone have a recommendation a bit further north, by West Palm Beach? I'd like to take my grandmother somewhere for lunch tomorrow, but she lives a good chunk further north.

Captain Charlie's Reef Grill (aka Reef Grill) in Juno on Federal just S of Donald Ross (for dinner only). They also own a place 3 doors down in the same strip mall called, go figure, "3 Doors Down" that is open for lunch. They built it to catch the over flow from Reef Grill. Giant menu of the best seafood in Palm Beach, a lot of it from day boats. The specials are always great. Tempura Grouper cheeks are a must. Grilled Calamari or Oysters, Yellow Tail or Pompano as fresh as it gets, simply prepared. My go to place for the 10 yrs I was exiled there. You will not be sorry.

Darnit, I'm sorry I didn't catch this before I had to leave and get in the car! I went to http://www.johngs.com/ on my aunt's recommendation, and it was OK, but nothing special; there were very limited choices in seafood (fried or broiled scallops, shrimp, or fish). Ah well, maybe next time.

Does anybody know of a good local place for seafood?

Captain Jim's in North Miami sells to a lot of the restaurants in the area, including Joe's. They have their own boats. It's a seafood market and restaurant, either order off the menu, or pick out a fish and tell them how you want it cooked. Not fancy at all, but very fresh and very cheap.
