There have been several mentions of the expanded effort to provide winter markets in Chicago, but I haven't yet seen a post with the details. Here are a couple of photos from today's market at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park.

Robin Schirmer (am I right that she pretty much runs the whole Chicago-area effort?) selling sorghum(!), honey, fresh spinach, cheeses, and assorted flours and grains.

Local meal, $7 donation to support the Harvest of Hope emergency fund. From 12:00, clockwise: squash, sausage, mushroom and apple casserole; scalloped potatoes; breakfast casserole with cheese and spinach; salad; ham and cheese sandwich. Plus cider and a yogurt.

    More about the markets here.

    Chicago-area schedule here.

I highly recommend getting on the mailing list, which will let you know when a market is coming to a church near you and what you can expect to find that week. It also gives you the information you need to pre-order meat and poultry from Tom Arnold

Chicago's Green City Market is now open year round - on Wednesdays and Saturdays through December 20, and the first and third Saturday of each month during January 17-April 18.

Yes - I'd completely forgotten this until I nearly ran over Vital Information and his lovely progeny when we were on our way to pick up friends at Steppenwolf. We so rarely have a reason to head into that part of town, and once the Evanston Farmer's Market is done, we don't think about it any more - but it really isn't that hard to get to.

terrific Robin Schirmer-run winter market today at St. Bens in North Center, where I had some sweet, indoor-grown local strawberries (yes, local strawberries in December!), and bought some local buckwheat flour with plans to replicate a buckwheat pasta dish I had a couple of months ago in Friuli. Fresh eggs from the free-range chickens at C&D family farm too.
