    The Raffle

We’re thrilled to see that there’s been such an outpouring of interest in attending the LTH holiday party this coming Saturday, December 6 at Chuck’s. We’re especially excited that there will be so many people coming who have not been to one of these events in the past, so this post is to clarify the raffle, traditionally a particularly amusing feature of these parties.

For those who haven’t attended this party before, and who need a little guidance regarding the raffle, here are some examples of past raffle gifts:

    • Mike G’s home-cured bacon
    • A jar of leaf lard, rendered by Bruce Cook
Juicy Erotica, a volume of food-based literature from hellodali
    • Incredible-looking preserves made by Ellen Fiocchi
    • GWiv’s legendary Chili Oil
    • Octo-dog, an amazing machine, procured by Josephine, that transforms ordinary hot dogs into octopus-looking, edible sculpture
    • A bottle of Duke’s Mayonnaise (much cherished by JiminLoganSquare)
    • Cookie’s near-mythic chocolate sour-cream bundt cake
    • Salt Lick (Driftwood, TX) combo pack of BBQ sauces and rub from stevez

This raffle is voluntary – you don’t have to participate, but most everyone does and if you want to, just bring a food-related gift with a value of $10-15 and you’ll get a ticket. You’re guaranteed to win something.

I'm very much looking forward to the party. Is there a kind soul who could give me a ride from/to East Village/West Town on Saturday? Stomach and I would be very grateful. Please PM me.

    Thanks!

    {Update: I now have a ride. Thanks very much for all of the offers! See everyone Saturday.}

A few weeks ago Cathy2 and David Hammond approached me about selecting a draft beer for this event. Why not? I figured, since I'd most likely be bringing a ton of beer anyway. But picking out several nice bottles is a lot easier than picking one keg. Would the beer pair well with all or at least most of those different types of food? I want it to have some flavor, but not so much that it overshadows any lighter dishes. Still, it's gonna be cold that night; it ought to be a stronger, winter-weight beer. That's a lot of people, though; it should be a crowd pleaser. I spent many an agonizing hour drinking beer after beer, looking for the perfect fit. (Don't you feel sorry for me?)

I don't know if the beer I picked is perfect, but I think it'll fit the bill nicely. We'll have a keg of Two Brothers' new Bonfire Dunkel Weiss available for everyone at the party. (Well, everyone who is of age to drink it I mean.) It's a wheat beer, so it's not very heavy-bodied, but the darker malts give it a mild toasty chocolatey flavor that goes well with a variety of flavors, including spicy foods--it's assertive enough to hold its own without being a palate-killer. At 7.5% ABV it's a bit on the strong side, which is nice for a cold December evening (but do keep in mind the strength, as it goes down deceptively smoothly).

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the party!

    -Jim

I'm looking for a carpool option as I'm somewhat transportation-challenged (it's too far to bike ride and there doesn't appear to be a good public transport option). If anyone has some space in their car, I'd love a ride. I'm located in Lakeview, but can get anywhere nearby on the CTA or bicycle to meet you where it's convenient.

Please pm me if you can help.

    Thanks,
