I know there are a lot of wonderful places open on New Year's Eve. But my daughter's birthday is New Year's Day, and she has requested that we go out to eat -- somewhere besides Chinatown, which has been our destination for the past five years. I'm looking for a place that is not over the top expensive, and preferably no farther north than the near north side of the city (we have to work the next day and we live in the southern suburbs). I'm kind of stumped, and hoped someone here might have some suggestions. She's kind of a picky eater, so I have to tread carefully here.

I don't know how old she is or how "nice" of a place you want it to be, but Silver Cloud in Bucktown is always open on New Years Day and I think they serve great bar food.
I think last year we went to Blue Line Club Car for lunch, which has unique decor (and board games, I believe) and decent bar food.

I would do a search on Metromix as to who is doing New Year's Day brunch, maybe those same places would be open for dinner. Just an idea. Good luck!

Maybe one of the restaurants in Greek Town is open? There's usually something there for even picky daughters (having one of those myself, although she is getting better now that she's older).

There are actually quite a few places shown as open on New Year's Day on Opentable. Some of the better mid-priced restaurants open include Aria, Bistro Margot, Blackbird, Cafe Spiaggia, the various Mia Francesca locations, Le Colonial, Mercat a la Planxa, and Real Tenochtitlan, and many of the steakhouses and seafood houses (Capital Grille, David Burke's, Joe's, McCormick & Schmick, Pete Miller's, Rosebud, Ruth's Chris, Smith & Wollensky, Sullivan's, Wildfire).

As for Chloe's idea (which is also a good one), you can find the Metromix listings for New Year's Day by clicking here.
