Please Help! Suggestions for Christmas Eve and Day

Hi Everyone,
Does anybody have any recs for Christmas eve and Day Dining? The christmas day brunch at the pennisula is $128 per person and the Four Seasons is Sold out. Regardless, These are a little out of my price range. please help. It could be brunch or dinner.

Are you looking for something formal, or something more affordable?

Andies in Andersonville will be open Christmas day (and I believe Eve as well) and serves quite good Mediterranean food at about $20-$25/person.

OpenTable might be helpful in your quest, if only to see where's open on Christmas eve / day.

I recently did an OpenTable search and found that most of the places that are normally open on Mondays are open on December 24. A few of them close earlier than normal, though.

Metromix did an article about places open on December 25 in the suburbs (click here).

I just got an email from Sweets and Savories. They're open on Christmas Eve and are running a special dinner. I think it's $60 per person for 5-6 courses.

I've been to Reza on Christmas Day - one year at the Clark St. Andersonville location and another time on W. Ontario St. The restaurant puts-out a large buffet, or you can order off the menu. I think the cost of the buffet is $19.95. Good food and a great price on Xmas Day. I prefer the Andersonville location.

Another alternative, probably for Xmas Eve is Chinatown. I'm recalling that a group of folks who regularly participate here and who don't celebrate Christmas, gather in Chinatown for dinner. The Chinatown restaurants are open Christmas Day, also as I'm recalling.

Has anyone seen a revised list for this year? I'm looking for a place for dinner on 12/25. It needs to be veggie friendly. Anything open around Argyle/Broadway?

I've got friends staying downtown. If it's near a red/brown/blue line stop, that's a plus. I checked availability on Open Table. Nothing really jumped out at me.

Christmas Day is business as usual on Devon Ave and Chinatown. By extension, I have to believe there will be plenty open on Argyle open. It might be a good idea to call places on Argyle you are likely to visit to double-check they are indeed open. Note some restaurants on Argyle are closed every week on Thursdays.

Regarding Devon Ave be sure to contact the restaurant before heading over. Last year, for example, I wanted to carry-out Khan BBQ for our family dinner but they were actually closed on Christmas.

Just posted - Christmas Eve at Mado: $35. You will love the space and the honesty and warmth of the cuisine and hosts if you try it. If I didn't have two services to sing and two family parties to hop to, I'd be there for the julbord.

If all else fails. Bijans is open 365 days a year till 4am (kitchen till 3). Best part is they actually have good food. So keep this in mind if you find yourself in a real jam.

I actually like Bijan's a lot (so does my 7 year old son). It's one of those little places we always seem to forget about.

Went to Chinatown last year on Christmas Day.....it was a madhouse. Lots of people apparently had the same idea.

Prairie Grass Cafe will be open on Christmas Eve for Dinner. We will serve our regular menu + Holiday Specials. I will be out front roasting complementary chestnuts on the Weber Grill and serving up some Hot Apple Cider.

Last year we did our Christmas day dinner at Silver Seafood on Broadway, one stop south of Argyle on the Red Line. Very crowded but they do honor reservations. Take a look:

here's our schedule of hours for the holidays:

christmas eve: 9-9
christmas day: 9-6(ish)
new year's eve: 9-9
new year's day: 9-6 (at least, we haven't settled on that date yet.)
chinese new year's eve: 1/25/09 8:30-6
chinese new year day: 1/26/09 closed

if anyone has any questions, just call us. and since we're open, feel free to bring in your birds for cooking or order pigs for your parties!

Sorry, there is a slight change in schedule.

We will be open on Chinese New Year's Day, but we will be closed the following Thursday (we will be on our normal schedule).

I just checked.... Khan's will be closed on 12/25 again this year.
Reza's (mentioned previously in this thread) will be open Christmas Day 11 am - 11 pm.
So, yes, Ronnie's suggestion to call first is excellent advice....

We have reservations at Sweets and Savories for Christmas Eve dinner. They are offering a 5 course "traditional" Christmas dinner for $50 per person. Christmas Day we're headed to Mercat la Planxa for afternoon tapas. They are offering their regular a la carte menu all day, and from 5-8pm there will be a multi-course holiday-themed tapas tasting as well. Happy Holidays to all! Lynn

Anyone know if TAC Quick is open on Christmas Eve? We're trying to finalize dinner plans with another couple and they'd like Thai food. But, TQ is closed today and not answering their phone. The other couple suggested Thai Pastry, where we haven't been - - but, we think we'd prefer TQ.

Alternatively, does anyone know if any of the good Vietnamese places around Argyle are open tomorrow night? We think we could convince the other couple to go for Vietnamese, but Tank Noodle and Hai Yen are closed for Christmas.

Mitsuwa Japanese market is open on Christmas day. The food court is open until 5 PM.

For any last minute grocery shopping, Garden Fresh markets will be open from 7 AM to 3 PM.

I thought I'd revise this list with new specifics. I'll be seeing my parents on Christmas Day and could use a non-ethnic, quiet place that's relatively inexpensive (under $20 per entrée) that's either close to Niles, Downers Grove, or Union Station. I tried OpenTable and came up with nothing.
