overlooked items on fastfood menus

While the Butter-Burgers are quite enjoyable, the next time you're at Culvers try the POT ROAST SANDWICH. Unbelievable. And I don't even care for pot roast...

I'll second that recommendation. A friend turned me on to them several years ago.

Their Reuben isn't what I'd expect from a real deli, but it's better than what I expected from a fast food chain.

I like the french fried onion rings at Popeye's. And they don't have them sitting around, so they're always cooked to order.

Popeyes ranks #2 on my list of awful slow service, thus my frequent comment that "Fast food is neither". I happen to like their crawfish, and once waited over 15 minutes in a drive through line for my order, and that is AFTER giving it to the voice behind the little speaker. It wasn't that they were busy, there was only one other car in front of me. I'll never know how long it actually took, because I finally gave up and went to pick my daughter up, later than I should have been.

#1 for crappy slow service is Long John Silver. And it's consistently bad at every one of their stores I've ever been to. No wonder so many of them have closed.

The best service I've ever seen at a fast food chain is Portillos. During the lunch rush, they send someone down the line with a wireless radio to send in the orders, The line always moves fast, and when you get to the front, your food is ready for you.

That's a given when you're ordering onion rings that need to be made to order. I don't mind. In fact, I never use the drive-through when getting them.

BTW, I thought the subject of this topic was "overlooked items on fastfood menus", not which fast food place is slowest...

I used to like the California Cobb salad (whatever they were calling it) when McDonald's first introduced their upscale salad offerings a few years ago (with Newman's dressings), but they no longer have it. I still like their apple pies.

Arby's fish sammiches with spicy mayo. Most Arby's only do fish around the lenten season.When they are avail, give them a try. Do NOT order the reg fish sammich with the regular tartar sauce unless you like the sugary sweet tartar sauce stuff. I, myself, only prefer the tartar sauce made from real mayo which is NOT sweet. Arby's regular tartar sauce is the sugary stuff. The spicy mayo sauce is not.

Also, the fried fish sammich at Portillos is a thing of beauty as far as fast food (minus tartar - again, they use the sugary stuff. Why people prefer sugary frosted, fried fish, I'll never know.)

Portillos 2/3 lb burger. A bargain amongst their generally overpriced menu.

I've never seen a fish sandwich at Arby's, but I'll watch for it now. BK's Big Fish sandwich sux the big one. Culver's has a great fish sandwich. McD's fish hooks me about twice a year for some reason.

Other than the culver butterburger, perhaps my fav fast food burger, although I like mine with bacon and cheese. And I do actually like the Portillos beef and cheddar on a croissant, not the best croissant or the best beef, but together the sum is much better.

Try the do-it-yourself chili & tamale boat at Portillo's.

Just order a bowl of chili and tamale and assemble at your table.

Don't try it in the drive thru!

The chicken pot pie at KFC never disappoints. Creamy sauce, all white meat chunks and a flaky, super flaky top crust all for under $5.
Ditto on the special spicey fish sammy at Arbys sold only during lent. Yum!

Do they still do that in the chicago area Popeye's? I never see that item on the menu boards at all the popeyes I've been to recently.

I miss them.

My favorite overlooked fast food item. I like to order cheese fries from Steak n Shake and ask for BBQ sauce on the side and dip the fries into it. A SnS manager showed that to me once and got hooked.

The last time I had them was last winter, in a Chicago area Popeye's. So if they're removed them from the menu, it was since then.

A few of the Popeye's I've been in over the years have onion "petals" which are vastly inferior (although they serve them with a remoulade-like sauce which, while too sweet, is pretty tasty). Some time in the six months I had the rings, though, so I know they're still around, at least at the Golf & Waukegan unit.

Rodeo Cheeseburger, hold the cheese, at Burger King.

Flame-broiled hamburger on sesame seed bun, with three onion rings smashed into it, slathered with barbecue sauce, for $1.29. One of many ultimate guilty pleasures.

Last spring, Long John Silvers had "Buttered Lobster Bites". Butter? No. Lobster? No. Bite (size)? Yes. Delicious? Double yes.
I believe it was langostinos and a bunch of fake butter flavoring in a bready batter. About as far from organic as you can get, but darn fine fast food eating. I dont remember it before last year (I never go to LJS unless it is for this item), but I'm hoping it will make a reappearance this year. A press release I found online said it started Feb 27th in '08, so perhaps it won't be too long.

I live just a few miles from that Popeye's. Will give them a try again. Hate the parking there...love the food. lol
