Does anyone happen to know the law in Chicago regarding where you can grill and smoke? I'm particularly curious about the park near the beach at Wilson and the cement area between two apartment buildings.

    Links would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Grilling must be confined to enclosed metal containers and may only take place within dedicated grilling areas. Hot coals must be doused with water, and ashes and coals must be properly disposed of in red used-coal receptacles. For more information, contact the applicable region office.

The Chicago Park district offers the following short blurb in their FAQs about grilling:

%&^(* Darrin, was just posting that :D ! Public beaches are run by the park district - go to http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.comand search "Montrose Beach" under Parks & Facilities for contact information.

As for your stairwell, I'd call the number at the bottom of this page on the City of Chicago website. There are a lot of variables involved, I would make sure I got a very specific answer to your specific situation.

    Hi,

If you have a portable tabletop grill, then don't mount it on a picnic table. If the Park District Police come riding through, they will ask you to move it to the ground. This is especially unattractive when it is hot and the legs a bit wobbly. I am speaking from personal experience.

If the park is divided into picnic groves, then you will need a picnic permit. You can check if your park falls into the permit system by consulting this page. If a grove/area is reserved and you are not the permit holder, then you will be asked to move on by the Park District Police.

For the cement area between two buildings, you need to talk to your landlord. It is not only his property, it is his neighbors.

    Regards,

After too many years of hearing issues with bizarre Chicago laws, it reminds me of the way an old friend described Massachusetts: Everything is either Mandatory or Forbidden :(
