My boyfriend is longing for the rice pilaf he recieved in school lunch. His recall is that it did not have any vegetables, was golden in color and it sounds like it has vermicelli in it. He says he has tried RIce a Roni's version and it is not the same.

Can someone help me with a recipe for this rather bland request?

Sweat diced onion, add rice and cook just a few minutes while stirring, add chicken stock ( twice as much stock as rice) and cook until done. Add some s+p and you'll have simple/bland rice.

*edit- I was answering to rice pilaf...for rice a roni use (and you can scale this to your needs)
    -1/2 pound vermicelli
    - 1 cup rice
    - 2 cups chicken stock
    - butter/oil to brown pasta before adding the rice

A simple way of making a dish like this is to add boiling chicken stock to the pasta, rice, and onions...cover tightly and bake in the oven for 25 or so minutes. 'Fluff' with a fork and you're set.

Google "homemade Rice a Roni" and you'll find lots of ideas. IIRC, Paula Deen has a recipe, I think hers is "Rice and Roni."
