Where can I buy Anaheim Chili Peppers in Chi?

The subject pretty much says it all. I love cooking New Mexican food but am sick of ordering my chilis from out of state. Anyone know where I can get raw Anaheim chilis and/or frozen green? I didn't see them at the Mexican grocery near my place.

And, in the event that there are lots of place to buy them and I'm just a dope, any place close to Wicker Park would be ideal.

Not sure about right now, but Cermak Produce (2701 W North Ave) has had them in the past... along with a pretty extensive array of other peppers. Good produce in general.

I would try any of the Tony's Finer Food Stores. The newer stores have huge produce sections and more types of peppers that I have seen anywhere. Give them a call. I usually shop at North Riverside but there are several throughout the area

It's rare to find any Hatch grown, but Anaheims, I do find just about at every fruit market worth it's salt (Cermak Produce Included). Next time I see them, I'll post the exact whereabouts, but you will be able to find them with relative ease. I haven't paid attention lately because my csa guy grew me about 20 lbs of them, and I made my green chile and froze it in single serve packs. Man, green chile, fried eggs with hot tortillas and hashbrowns. Easily in my top ten list of favorite meals ever.

Well I went on my Anaheim hunt and came up empty handed. Cermak didn't have'm today, nor did three other Hispanic groceries. Also tried Stanley's and Whole Foods. However, silver lining is that I spoke to the produce manager guy at Whole Foods and he told me they carry them sometimes but I can call him anytime and he'll be sure to have them in a day or two of the call. They may have them tomorrow but will definitely have them on Monday.

In the meantime, my chili will have to make do with poblanos.

Hold off on the whole foods order - I'm sure they will be charging you three times (at LEAST) what you'd be paying at a fruit mkt. I'm out of town right now, but I'll need to do a full round of shopping next Monday when I get back. Been gone since before xmas, and the fridge was left empty. I'll be sure to post my findings - not promising anything, but just hoping to help a fellow NM greenchilephile out. I wonder if it's the season, or maybe if the tamale making at xmas time (puercos o pollo verde) made a run on them thar chiles and most stores are dry from that. I do know, that I see them often. I don't buy them often, but I do see them often. I'll post something in the next few days.

Not always true. I just bought some peppers at Whole Foods for $1.99/lb. Then went to Andy's Fruit Ranch and Havestime and their peppers were also $1.99/lb.

Thanks all. The quest for New Mexican green chilies is a noble one.

They usually have them at La Casa del Pueblo which is about 5 doors down from our storefront. Don't know if it's too far of a drive, but if you're curious before you make the trip I can head down there and make sure.

Ouch Figmolly. That was a dagger in my heart. I am so homesick, and LCDP is one of my faves for cheap, no thrills, Mexican takeout. OP, - If you do go to LCDP, stop into the cafeteria for some tinga, some tamales if they have any left, and a few tastes of their other guisados. I cannot WAIT to get home next week. Darren72 - thanks for the correction. I will admit that I just assumed WF would be pricey.

Anaheim peppers were just spotted (by me) at Cermak Produce on Kedzie for $1.99/lb (same price that Whole Foods on Peterson had them for).

I didn't look at the price, but Marketplace on Oakton has them, they're right under the poblanos in the vegetable bin in the rear corner of the store that seems to be the catch-all (where stuff like lotus root and lemongrass usually are, along with the fresh orange juice)

Is it possible to get real New Mexican chiles (Hatch) in Chicago? I've mail-ordered them, but it's very expensive.

As an aside, I've often wondered why it's almost impossible to find Hatch chiles outside of New Mexico when they are a such an essential part of every-day life in New Mexico.
