I'd have to agree. I stopped in last week and tried the chesse + peppers and the cheese + beans tamales, and both were definitely heavy on the masa and light on other flavors.

Tamales los Mejores de Guerrero now serves tamales Oaxaqueños in addition to it's standard tamale fare - a rectangular-shaped tamale (maybe 4"x6") that's packed more densely, contains mole (rojo or another dark mole, I'm not certain) with chicken, and it's wrapped in banana leaf. Price: $2 each. These new tamale's (new at this restaurant) are a bit too dense for my liking but I've brought some to work a couple of times recently and the folks in the office who've tried them like them).

In addition to the tamales Oaxaqueños Bill mentioned above, TlMdG now sells several other "green" banana leaf tamal variations including corundas and tamales nejos. They also apparently sell Salvadoran tamales de elote. It sounds from Bill's description of the tamales Oaxaqueños, that the tamles nejos are simply the same thing deconstructed. Anyhow, this place is still turning out great fluffy and fresh corn husk tamales in a variety of flavors for $12/doz, a total bargain these days (especially after spending $20/pp for breakfast at A&T Grill next door).

Just stopped in here today for some excellent fat, fluffy tamales, and I would like to note that the nejos, Oaxaquenos, corundas, and tamales de elote, only seem to be available on weekends.

Mrs. Trpt had a hankering for tamales today so we drove up Clark Street to Tamales los mejores de Guerrero. We wound up with two dozen or so,split between green pork, dulce, corundas and tamales de Oaxaca. A little on the expensive side ($12 a dozen, more for the Oaxacas and corundas), but very, very good. (The family is from Iguala, which is on the old road from Mexico City to Acapulco, we've stopped there a few times for tacos and sidrales). On the weekends they have menudo and pozole too, we'll have to give it a whirl. Nice call.

Happy to report Bill's 5-year-old doom and gloom proved untrue, Tamales los mejores de Guerrero was busy as a London hat shop during Royal Wedding season. Multi generational families filled every seat in the single store front towering mounds of steaming tamales happily, quietly, devoured by guy, girl and grandmother alike.

Guerrero was so busy I shelved plans to eat-in and waited in line for tamale take out, when I got back in the car from shopping at Supermercado Chapala the aroma was so overpoweringly delicious I stopped in for a snack.

Tamales, and chapurado for that matter, were incredibly hot, lava hot, tongue singing hot, perfect antidote for a rainy cold Chicago afternoon.

We had an absolutely horrible experience this weekend. Saturday we went early to buy two dozen tamales, one dozen each of queso con rajas and verdes de puerco. Both were so salty as to be inedible, and dry and flavorless to boot. We returned them Sunday for a refund and probably won't go back. Plus they were really expensive, $14 a dozen. It's too bad, we used to like them but something seems to have gone south.

I was there Saturday early afternoon and had exactly the opposite experience. I'm fairly salt sensitive and did not find the tamales salty and thought them moist and flavorful. I will say, which has been noted in this thread, Tamales los mejores de Guerrero has a higher ratio of masa to meat than many tamale places, though this has been consistent since they opened.

We either have very different ideas about tamales or you got an off batch.

Pictures above dated 5.15 were actually taken Saturday 5.14.11, same day you were there. Here is an interior shot of a rajas con queso, also from Saturday.

As I said, this was really disappointing, because as you can see from previous posts we've had good experiences before. But this was really disheartening.

And I enjoyed the two you left with me at Rub.....Although my Honduran kitchen guy swears Honduran Tamales are los mejores de Tamales Mexicanos.
I love comfortable food, and comfortable restaurants.

I love the green Pizole with chicken at Los Mejores de Guerrero. Sadly, they only have it on the weekends. It is the best I have found in the area; unless someone knows a better spot?

Tamales los Mejores de Guerrero is a carry out staple in our house. Dinner a few nights ago did not disappoint. This was the first time I tried their pozole, which was excellent. The Tamales de Oaxaca is part of our standard order. The corn tamales were also excellent.
