Where to Eat in Nassau Bahamas-- Staying at Atlantis

I am hearing tales of woe about really expensive( of course living in Chicago, expensive I understand is relative) and lackluster food and/or lots of food poisoning ( but that could be eating raw conch and our fruits & vegetables outside of US issues). Oh by the way, is local water a yes or a no? What about raw fruits and vegetables ( I am a vegetarian but the rest of the party are all omnivores)?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. We leave on Wednesday morning.

I am willing to consider fasting in exchange for the good weather & large doses of Natural Vitamin D but I do not think my Mum-in-law, husband, and Mum would be so inclined.

For a great but really expensive high-end dinner, be sure to visit Gracliff. I've eaten in a lot of places all over the world, but so far Greycliff holds the record for highest price/person on the final bill. The food, wine, service and the overall experience were well worth the price.

I haven't been for a few years but in downtown Nassau, Cafe Matisse had excellent food at reasonable island prices. No sticker shock like Graycliff. However, if you don't want to pay the price of dinner at Graycliff, it's worth it to go for a drink.

I stayed at Atlantis in January 2005. I'm pretty sure I drank the water and was fine and I don't remember anyone being worried about food poisoning. As for expensive food, there's plenty of it at and near the resort. There was a somewhat reasonable sandwich shop that I walked to one night pretty close to Atlantis, but for real restaurants with actual good prices, you'll have to get to Nassau. It's a long walk or a short boat trip and maybe there's a bus too. In Nassau, I ate at one place that was on every list for tourists and remember it being tasty and well priced. Sorry I can't remember the name. I also randomly chose a restaurant that I saw lots of non-tourists eating at one day at lunchtime in Nassau and the soup I had there was really wonderful

I've been to Nassau (via cruises) 3 times. We went to Atlantis each time. Very expensive indeed, but it is an island. I didn't really have any meals that I could recommend. This shouldn't deter you. The meals I had were not at the higher end places there which seem to be nice from the outside. I never had any food or water problems either. You can take a cab to Nassau itself and find plenty of options all over the island as well as the city. Those cab drivers drive really, really fast!

Right across the bridge from Atlantis is a seafood restaurant called The Poop Deck (there are several other locations in Nassau), which we found to be an outstanding value when compared to the gouging you take eating anywhere within Atlantis itself.

Really fresh fish - we liked the grilled preparations best, and they have a really fantastic house made pepper sauce as well. After our first visit there we went back at least twice more during a long weekend. Highly recommended, and very close to Atlantis - you could easily walk there.
