I just saw this, don't know anything about it, but I'm trying to clear my schedule to attend:

PTA To Bite Into School Food Issues

Evanston's PTA Council is hosting a forum Thursday in which District 65 and 202 nutrition services officials will discuss our schools' meal programs....They'll also provide sample menu items, and discuss with the audience about how to implement ideas like the sourcing of food grown from area farmers, school gardens, recyclable lunch trays and composting.

The forum takes place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Terrace Room at ETHS (Evanston Township High School.) Attendees can use the school's southwest entrance and follow the signs to the meeting room....The task force is preparing a resolution supporting a plan to improve school meal lunch programs statewide.

I'm mulling over this meeting and trying to write up a full report...let's just say that I did not leave the presentation reassured that school lunches were somehow less awful than I imagined.
They were significantly worse than I'd imagined. A PowerPoint of the presentation is available here.

Fortunately, I also met with a group of people involved in the IL Food, Farm, and Jobs Act of 2007, HB 1300 (Public Act 95-145) who are, among other things, working towards building an infrastructure to bring local foods to IL schools.

As a proud graduate of the Evanston public school system, I can attest that the school lunch menu presented in that presentation looks considerably better than what I was served as a kid (which I recall that I enjoyed). It is unfortunate that every Thursday isn't pizza day, though, as it was when I was a student. :)
