Groceries around Magnolia and Lawrence?

RoadhouseDaughter2 just moved into an apartment on Magnolia, south of Lawrence. The miserable weather and mountains of snow are making it tough to explore the neighborhood, leaving the poor thing desperately in need of a good grocery store. I thought there was a Jewel (not necessarily a good grocery store, but hey, it's there) either on Broadway or Sheridan in that area, but it's been a long time since I've been a regular in that part of town.

Can anyone recommend any good groceries, produce, or meat markets in that general vicinity? Please don't let my daughter starve.

The Jewel you may have in mind is at the three-way intersection of Broadway, Montrose, and Sheridan. There's a newish Whole Foods not far away on Halsted. I also like Edgewater Produce (The little sister of Harvestime). The two butchers in the area that I am familiar with are Lincoln Quality Meats and Paulina Meat Market, both of which are a short drive from Lawrence and Magnolia. I presume there are a lot of smaller grocers in the area, especially near Argyle, but I don't shop there and can't be much help.

One of the stores that I will miss the most when I leave Chicago in a few weeks is Harvestime, which is a little west of where your daughter is. It is easily accessible by bus or bike when the weather is nice.

They have a marvelous, spanish style butcher shop with so many **cheap** meats there. For instance, I often pay $1.69 per pound for boneless skinless chicken breast there as opposed to $5.99 or more a pound for it a Jewel. Ribeyes seem always priced at $2.69 a pound The store always has an abundance of freshly made and delivered tortillas, cheap milk, a great choice of inexpensive produce, and some great deli items that make preparation of some, especially Mexican favorites, really easy.

I only discovered Harvestime about six months ago. Since then, it has become my "go to" grocery store.

I'm a mile north of your daughter and would second the Edgewater Produce recommendation. I also trek down to the Whole Foods on Halsted now and again. In case the Montrose/Sheridan Jewel isn't to her liking, there is another at Berwyn/Broadway that is being renovated and has gotten better over the last 3 years, when I first moved up here.

I also wouldn't forget about the various Asian markets; I'm a fan of Golden Pacific, a building or so north of the Berwyn/Broadway Jewel. Great prices on all sorts of products - veg, herbs, fish, pantry staples - and a fun place to browse.

There's a butcher north on Broadway - maybe around Thorndale or so? - but I can neither remember the name nor put in a recommendation, as I've never been myself...

I've passed all of this info along to the little darlin' and she's most appreciative.

I didn't know where to put this, maybe a new thread. But I went to Edgewater Produce today and they have a bunch of fresh ripe hass avocados from mexico 3 for $1.89. Made great guacamole tonight, a great antidote to the snow.
