Last year, I saw an article on a Mexican restaurant in Milwaukee that is located in a church basement. As I am a sucker for church-based restaurants, especially those with a mission to train people to work in food operations. Does anyone remember what the restaurant was called and where it is located.

You are absolutely correct. Cathy2 and I were discussing this place last year when we were talking about fish fries.

I could not remember this place for the life of me.

I am going to try to get there next Friday night as I need to be in Waukesha on Saturday morning.

Café el Sol—Mexican and Puerto Rican Food With Flair

Café el Sol, located in the heart of Milwaukee's Hispanic community, within the United Community Center, specializes in both Mexican and Puerto Rican cuisine—adding more than a touch of flair to your next breakfast, lunch or dinner.

A highlight is the special Latin-style fish dinner buffet on Friday nights complete with live Latin entertainment from 5 to 8:30 p.m.—definitely not your ordinary fish fry. The Friday night Fish Dinner Buffet was voted in October of 2003 by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel readers as one of the "Best Ethnic Adaptations" of a local fish fry.
The unique and very popular Friday evening fish dinner buffet offers both broiled and fried fish with Puerto Rican rice and french fries with fresh salad.

Each Friday evening buffet also includes Live Latin entertainment from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The "La Peña" performances are named for an old Spanish tradition among travelers to gather around bonfires to share their experiences through music, dance and stories.

Café el Sol also offers a relaxing atmosphere and an excellent drink selection. Newcomers say it's the best-kept secret on Milwaukee's south side. Find out for yourself! It's an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy downtown area without sacrificing the convenient location.

    La Peña
Join us this Friday for our famous Fish Fry Buffet, a Margarita and Latin Music!

In addition to exposing people to the cuisine of the Latino community, Café el Sol also entertains its patrons with traditional Latin music. Latino Arts, Inc. brings in local and regional musicians to perform a variety of Latin music on Friday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Peñas originated long ago in Spain, when gypsies made their homes in caves in the mountains among the peñas, or large rocks. At night, the gypsies would gather around bonfires to share stories through spoken word, music, and dance.

Café el Sol has recreated this tradition by adding entertainment to its Friday night fish dinner buffet. Music is kept subdued so customers may dine and chat, but many choose to get up and dance.

In the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's annual reader poll of the best area fish fries, Café el Sol's Friday night fish dinner buffet was voted among the "Best Ethnic Adaptation" of a fish fry in the Milwaukee area.

Fish dinner buffet & live entertainment: $11.95. Dinner served 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. with live entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.

There is a pretty good Mexican place in downtown Waukesha...La Estacion. In an old train station. Mack's Frozen Custard, also in Waukesha, is worth a visit. If you've never been to Waukesha, bring a map. You'll need it.

I need a map of Waukesha even though I have been there ten times. There is a Greek place in the downtown area called Kalypso's that is pretty decent. They were great under the old owner.
