You beat me to it. I drove past this weekend and saw the "for rent" signs. Mr. X and I had made it an occasional stop on a summer night when out for a walk.

Panther -- Rainbow Cone would be about a 25 mile/45 minute plus drive. The Chocolate Shoppe at 5337 W. Devon would be a suitable, closer replacement. (I might not be reading the humor in your message though...)

I remember having fantastic birthday cakes from Gladstone's as a kid. I cannot speak to their quality but they were visually delightful -- decorated with toy cars, baseball player figurines, even Barbie dolls that were 'dressed' in elaborate frosting gowns (served at my sister's parties ). For me, Gladstone's was the first place I encountered these 3-dimensional decorations on cakes and they obviously made a lasting impression. It was cool, after the cake was eaten, to still have the cars or the little baseball dudes to play with. These were some very special experiences.

Is there any reason why you wouldn't go to their suburban location? I wonder if they planned to phase out the city location once the suburban location was established.

I haven't been to the original location in 20 years and I've never been to the suburban one. However the pictures on the link you posted don't remind me at all of the place I used to know. I'm sure they have changed ownership many times over the years. The place I remember has been gone a long time now.

The people that ran the bakery since the 50's sold it back in 1995. The most recent owners bought the place only about a year ago. The word in our local neighborhood paper is that they were about to be evicted. I guess the bakery business wasn't so good in the neighborhood any more. Maybe that's why they opened the suburban branch. Maybe the expense of the suburban branch tapped them out at the mothership. Who knows? It's all speculation at this point. All I know is I miss their danish!

I probably won't visit the suburban branch because that would just be setting myself up for a disappointment (kind of like the time I visited the suburban Buffalo Ice Cream parlor with Cathy2).

I can't speak to their authenticity, but I always enjoyed the paczki made by the original Gladstone every "Fat Tuesday." I thought their paczki were much better than those at 5 or 6 other bakeries I have tried. Driving down to Milwaukee Avenue became a pre-Lent ritual for me, as I picked up a variety for neighbors and friends.

I just called to check, and Gladstone North will NOT be continuing this tradition. The woman I spoke with at Gladstone North said they recently redid their entire product line, and the paczki are gone, as are--I believe she said--things like donuts.... She also said they had had no association with the Gladstone in the city for several months, so it sounds like there perhaps were different owners of the two locations.

With Fat Tuesday about 5 weeks away, I guess I'll be looking for a paczki-fix replacement fairly soon....

Attempted to meet friends at Moon Palace in Chinatown last night, and found it to be completely boarded up upon arrival. No signs of any sort indicating what might be going on. They remodeled in the not-too-distant past so that seems unlikely as a possible explanation. A call to the phone number on their website this morning just went straight to a rather anonymous voice mail greeting.

Anybody know if Moon Palace is gone for good, or if something else happened?

Chatting with the Bolat truck guy near my office, I was relieved to learn that the restaurant is NOT gone for good. Saw this in the latest installment of Dish:

Jack Sanseeha, the owner of Bodhi Thai Bistro (6211 W. Roosevelt Rd., Berwyn; 708-484-9250)—which he calls the only Thai restaurant in Berwyn—is one of those guys who grew up in the restaurant business. “My family owns several in Chicago,” he says. “Opart Thai House. That’s my cousin. Another cousin owns Amarit.” When Sanseeha moved to Berwyn in 2003, he found out that the closest Thai places in Oak Park would not deliver to Berwyn. So, with the help of the Berwyn Development Corporation, he opened his 75-seat vegetarian-focused spot with his father (Veera Sanseeha) and stepmother (Vilairat Junthong; formerly of Sticky Rice) on January 21st—Jack’s birthday. Expect dishes such as mini sweet-corn-and-taro fritters, and spicy green papaya salad with chile garlic lime dressing.

I drove by tonight, and the place was packed. Too bad I did not get the e-mail until after we ate. Having Thai in walking distance from our house is a very exciting news.

Your Kitchen has opened around the corner from me. It's a takeout place making what the owners tell me is comfort food from scratch. The menu has reuben hushpuppies, house-cut fries, gumbo, and other family recipes. They've got a tiny space with no seating, and a pretty professional looking kitchen. The man/ woman team couldn't have been nicer when I stopped in, and seem to have poured their heart and soul into this business. I wish them well, and will give them a try soon.

This should come as no surprise to anyone in the Lincoln Square area, but it appears that Skewers has closed. The place was dark as I drove past last night a little after 6ish, and signs taped in the window announce "BUSINESS FOR SALE". In all the times I walked past, I think I only ever saw a handful of people dining in.

I imagine it was a hard sell for middle-eastern food just a couple Brown line stops away from Kedzie. I often think the same thing about the indian place at the corner of Lincoln & Wilson, but a bus ride up to Devon isn't quite the same thing as hopping on the train.

I hope it's open late like the Lawrence location - while their food isn't perfect, Georges is one of the few places I know of where you can get a plate of hummus-shawerma and kibba mosul at 3am.
