I stopped by Moon's for lunch this afternoon. What a great way to perk up an otherwise boring, gray Tuesday! I ordered the short-rib sandwich on a hardroll and a side of chili mac.

The short-rib sandwich was plentiful and tasty with a side of good, basic gravy. The chili mac was the real highlight of the lunch and is one of those dishes that I will be craving as I lay in bed awake some night. The elbow macaroni were cooked perfectly tender and toothsome (and better than most Italian restaurants in the city manage to cook their pasta). The chili was diner-style chili and was light on the heat but heavy on beefy flavor with a good ratio of beef and beans. I ate half of the order and took the rest back to work with me. Tomorrow I will heat it up and swan around my office floor making everyone else jealous.

The only thing I can't understand is why the chili mac seems to have flown under the LTH radar thus far.

i'm more of a moon's-in-the morning-person. plus, i never would order chilimac as i loathe elbow macaroni. i get my chili fix at ramova's on a regular basis but i will try the plain chili next time i'm at moon's for lunch, thanks for the heads up. justjoan

I found myself needing a Moon's visit for lunch again yesterday. I just love this place. My roast beef sandwich on a hardroll with lettuce, mayo and mustard was extremely satisfying-the roast beef was cooked perfectly medium rare. I had a side of chili mac again, which I enjoyed just as much as the last time.

justjoan-FWIW, I am not sure I would order the chili on its own.

Thanks for making the (phone) call, GWiv. I read about the closing last night in TOC and I could not believe my eyes. Everytime I've been in Moon's, it's been very busy, and it just seems like the kind of place that could do well in even tough times like these.

According to their website (who knew?) they opened during the Great Depression, this economy should be but a hiccup in comparison.

whew. Huge relief. I was saddened but given hope by the fact that the TOC fact-checkers had done a lousy job with at least one other place on the list. O'Fame did not close - they moved to new digs on Western. A move that had been a long time in the making.

i was planning to drive by today. thanks gary for relieving me (and others) from the depression that would have followed moon's closing. i figured if the news was true, it would most likely be because someone made the owner an offer for the crappy little building he couldnt refuse. condos are going up all around that very rundown neighborhood, including right next door to moons. the economic depression might have actually save moon's from that fate, at least in the near future. justjoan

I read about the closing in a magazine, so I guess it's back to the old saw about not believing everything you read...anywhere.

I read this yesterday and was more than bummed...never been to Moon's, but is a priority...

If nothing else, this error just emphasizes that procratination can be tragic, especially for "stuck in time" joints like this in Chicago...

Reminds me..better get to Klas soon too...

I hope that the news outlets that reported this ERRONEOUS news will print big RETRACTIONS, too. As if times aren't tough enough. These types of mistakes can be very damaging.

i emailed heather shouse, dining editor at timeout about their mistake. i hope others DID, OR WILL, as well. ronnie's right, this could really hurt them if people don't check with the restaurant on their own. justjoan

I have had weekend breakfast there several times and the take out business has always been very brisk.

I have no doubt that they will continue to do great business.

Looks as if Moon's is off the list now. I just had a Jumpball the other day. Ridiculously large and awesome.

jumpball at moon's is a humungous plate of eggs scrambled with italian sausage, cheese, onions and potatoes. i believe it costs about $7. justjoan

PID-Strangely enough, that's exactly what the hubby ordered. That Jumpball is so good, I have the grill guy thrown in some giardiniera too. Side of Rye toast and half goes home. I could really just split the Jumpball and order a side of the crispy sausage patties. One of these days I want to order a hamburger, but I always panic and go Jumpball.

i just got an email from heather shouse, dining editor at timeout, in response to mine, saying that the reason they thought moon's was closed was because no one answered the phone and it looked closed when one of their staff drove by. seeing as how moon's is a breakfast and lunch only restaurant, i suspect timeout tried contacting them in the afternoon. pretty poor journalism, IMO, which is what i wrote back to HS in my second email! most of moon's clientele looks like neighborhood people who probably dont read timeout, so hopefully the negative effect of this mistake won't be too great. jj

Not reading TOC like I should (or shouldn't) I went to Moon's on Saturday for a corned beef sandwich and fried potatoes. I didn't even realized that they had closed - NOT. If the corned beef didn't quite reach Manny's level or the potatoes Patty's, both were quite worthy and Moon's was hopping.

Egg Sandwich w/ beef sausage and cheese. Delicious. Great service. My son loved the pancakes and they treated him great. Busy the entire time, very brisk carry-out business.

I can't wait to go back for a corned beef sandwich.

If Justjoan is worried about poor journalism she should be careful about gross generalizations about who reads or doesn't read which publications.
