Obama's new White House chef Sam Kass will be thinking green & local

President Obama will have plenty of fresh, seasonal fare to chow down on when his personal chef, Sam Kass, joins him in the White House.
Dinners at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue might be a little greener these days: the new White House assistant chef, Sam Kass, is an environmentally conscious University of Chicago graduate who founded a home cooking service that focuses on ingredients from local farms.

Kass, 28, the Obama family's personal chef in Chicago, will assist White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford, a holdover from the Bush White House. Kass, who grew up in Chicago, trained at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Europe before going to work at Avec, a Chicago wine bar that specializes in Mediterranean food.

Avec chef-owner Paul Kahan has said, "The cool thing about Sam is that he's very active, very involved with issues that relate to food. His goal has always been to improve the world from a food standpoint."

When I was at AVEC this evening, I inquired about their former colleague now working at the White House. They were very thrilled to affirm their friend was now the President's personal chef.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Did I miss something?
Isn't the quote " will assist White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford"
Is she still in charge or not?

she's still in charge, but my guess is that she'll manage the large-scale meals (state dinners, luncheons, etc.. catering-type stuff) while Kass will cook the family meals.

Heh, he graduated from Lab the same year my wife did, and then from the College two years after us. Had no idea about that connection before, and now I have to wait for her to get off of work to see how she remembers him from high school

Another local chef has ties to the White House as well. This one, on the other hand, is also an LTH Charter Member.

The way it typically works is that the White House chef is not replaced at the beginning of a new administration. Most likely, Kass will replace Comerford at some point in the future (unless plans change, etc.) I don't believe the duties are simply split between personal meals and big catering operations.

A junior senator earns enough to have a personal family chef? I'm in the wrong line of work!

And considering the Obamas had over $4MM in income in 2007, I think they were doing ok.
