Does anyone recall seeing Japanese turning/spiral slicers at local Asian markets? I tried calling a few stores but didn't get any luck due to language barriers.

I know that Northwest Cutlery sells them but I was hoping for better pricing at asian markets such as Chicago Food Corp, Super H Mart, Argyle, etc. Any ideas?

The housewares store inside H-Mart has a fairly big selection, and I wouldn't doubt if they carried those--probably the Joyce Chen brand. H-Mart would be the first place I'd look.

Are you talking about the green benriner?
Woks N Things in Chinatown had it the last time I visited.

Crrush is quite right: I've been eyeing these at H-Mart Niles for some time, I don't know the brand but I can tell you where they were when I saw them last: they're on the parking-lot-side wall, about 2/3 of the way to the back of the store at about eye level (can you tell I lust after one? I've been wanting to try Alton Brown's Beet Slaw) It cost more than I could justify for that single use (well, I'd shred daikon, too,) which is why I've never purchased one.

A quick google search turned up the green Benriner on Amazon at $47.50 + shipping.

How does that compare to the local stores?

I think it was somewhere in that range (could have been anywhere from $30 to $80 to cause me not to buy;) It was similar, but IIRC the model at H-Mart sets up parallel to the counter, like a cranked apple peeler, rather than perpendicular to the counter like that one. Hitting Chinatown this afternoon for Valentine's supplies, I'll check the housewares store in the mall.

It's described as a "Japanese turning vegetable slicer."

It also makes great fresh potato chips (the kind they serve at Harry Carrey's). It's one continuous thin potato ribbon that fries up beautifully like an elephant ear. Season with your favorite spices and call it your own. Oh, and you don't even need to peel the potato....talk about 5 minutes meals.

I was right - found one in Chinatown in the $70 range. I'll post the photo if it turned out.

These are definitely available at Mitsuwa - last time I looked, I believe there were two kinds available. Not certain what the price was.

Thanks to all those that responded. I purchased the Benriner one I've been coveting at Super H Mart over the weekend and it cost much less than what I found online ($64.99). :D
