I have been to a couple South side groceries looking for ham hocks, pickled pigs feet, and other such things but I haven't been able to find anything. Does anyone know about any specific groceries, like the physical address? I mean it was so pathetic celebrating this New Years without ham hock in the black eyed peas and I have been itching to make red beans and rice and jambayala. I live near Western Avenue and Chicago Avenue so the closest would be preferable but I am willing to go the extra mile. Please help!

    Jennyannydots,

I was equally overwhelmed nine years ago, and thought at that time that the only options were Jewel and Dominicks.

I've learned through trial and error, and also the good folks here at LTH Forum, that we have a wealth of shopping options here in chicagoland. You'll be able to find everything on your list here: http://www.fairplayfoods.com/

We go to the one at Western and Cermak (2200 south, or 22nd St.)

I recently discovered that our Jewel has not only hamhocks, but also smoked pork neckbones. Though Evil Ronnie knows whereof he speaks, in case you're stuck at a big chain, ask in the meat department.

You also aren't too far from the Cathedral of Meat, Peoria Packing House.

I know it's far, but, EuroFresh Market, 160th and Harlem in Tinley Park has them. I have also seen them at Gilmart, Archer and just west of Pulaski; Bobak's, Archer, just west of Kostner; and Pete's, Cermak and Rockwell.

I've recently purchased smoked ham hocks at Strack and Van Til on Elston. They may have a decent selection for you...

Closest — Good quality smoked ham hocks should be available at any Polish deli. Others have suggested locations but the closest to you is probably Rich's Deli, only steps from Western & Chicago. It's a good place to buy beer and lots of other stuff too.

The extra mile — It's probably too far for frequent visits but Tennessee Country Meats in Gary has the area's best selection of Southern ingredients (I'd love to hear of any better). They have serve-yourself tubs of smoked hocks, tails, neck bones etc as well as salt pork (regular and aged) and salted ribs. You'll also find a selection of specialty flours and grits, pickles and chow chow, as well as a nice variety of frozen beans and peas. Not to mention an impressive array of bright red sausages (you can also see some of their cured meats in the linked photo).

No need to go south if you ask me. Search for certisavers, Tony's Finer Foods, possibly a Jimenez for starters.
I'd start there before Jewel Or Dominick's (although you will most likely find them there.) Those two will charge an insane amt.
